CPU Fan Stops - Abit IC7 Max3 - Sonata
I am running a new, home built PC with the Abit IC7 Max3 mobo, an Antec Sonata case and PS, and a 3ghz P4. The PC has begun rebooting without warning. MBM showed everything stable until just before reboot when CPU temperature spiked. I pulled the side off the case and watched. I discovered that the CPU fan was stopping for no apparent reason (no dust, no power spikes in either direction). The fan is the stock Intel fan.
If anyone has any ideas as to what to check/change I would appreciate it?

Okay...here's what I suggest to troubleshoot.
1) Make sure that the BIOS settings are configured to shut down the PC based on CPU temperature. That'll at least keep you safe. Disable the CPU RPM monitor shutdown feature.
JUST MAKE SURE THE TEMPERATURE SHUTDOWN IS ACTIVE.
If you can...try pulling the CPU fan directly into an available PSU lead or perhaps another header on the mobo.
What I'm trying to determine is if the problem is with that specific CPU fan header or the fan itself. Fans can fail.
Fire up the PC and use MBM to monitor the CPU temp and also watch that fan. If the fan stops again when it's running off another header...or even better directly off the PSU...then you've got you're culprit.
You'll most likely have to replace the fan...probably it'd be easier to replace the whole fan and heatsink unit.
If the fan doesn't fail after a few reboots and then complete shut downs and power ups...well...looks like it's the CPU fan header on the mobo.
You can confirm this by re-plugging the fan back to that header and see if the problem repeats itself.
Just make sure you have safety measures in place to protect that CPU from overheating.
Thanks for your help.
If anyone has any other suggestions for what to look at while my toolkit's out, please let me know.
