Can't delete Roxio

edited November 2004 in Science & Tech
I can't delete Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 from my computer. I installed it a couple weeks ago and it was working fine. Yesterday I tried to burn a CD and I got the message "Severe, Unable to find a Certificate File". After the message it just shuts down completely. Everytime I try to reinstall it or delete Roxio I get a message saying "msiexec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Also every time I try to move a file to a different folder I get a dialog box saying "preparing to install Roxio Easy Media Creator 7." Just tell me what you need to know about my PC and I can post it.

I'll tell ya what. While half the internet was using Nero, I stuck out and continued to swear by Roxio Easy CD Creator 6. Then one day, it did what you got. And again. I could never really get it to work right. Then I said, "Hey! Let's upgrade!" So I got Easy Media Creator. Firstly, they screwed up that one big time. Poor interface, etc. And it just would NOT work. So I installed Nero. It works. Uninstalled Roxio and never looked back.

So, while I don't (never really figured out how to fix my problem like yours) have any help for you, I suggest you check out Nero's latest offering :)

Um, unless you delete all registry keys that have Roxio in a path or value or key name, NO IDEAS.

ONCE you delete the registry keys you will need to uninstall it manually, ie delete the Roxio folder, then run an orphan file remover to clean up the system directories dll files that Roxio stuck into Windows itself. The last is something that Norton Windoctor can do part of, and Iolo System Mechanic in the latest version can also help with this. IF you have Norton Systemworks 2004, it can also find the files and delete them and the registry, but it might take it literally all night as it looks for deps systemwide before deciding what to safely remove. Generally, however, it does not destroy anything except what you want it to destroy, in this case Roxio.

As for your msiexec.exe file, at a guess a Roxio install replaced the stock one that your particular Windows install wants to use. ONCE Roxio is gone, you can EXPAND the msiexec.exe (Microsoft System Installer EXECcution EXEcutable (executable=runnable program file)) from a recent Microsoft Office CD or from the OS install CD.

I'll let you decide if that sequence or a repair install (if this is XP Pro or 2000 Pro) is easier, and cannot guarantee that unless you do the things I talked about first that the repair install would even work.

So, yes, there is a way out of a clean install, but it is not an easy one at all.

my approach would be to safemode boot and shift delete the whole roxio folder then look for Roxio in the registry and kill it.. may or may not work but worth a try

I booted in safe mode and cleared the roxio folder then went to my regedit and cleared all my Roxio keys out. I repair install would not work b4 I did all this. I now have one file left in my Roxio folder and it is "Shellex.dll" every time I try to delete it it says it's being used by another program even in safe mode. Any ideas???
