Disk Failure ?

edited November 2004 in Hardware
Have Raid 1 setup (2 x Maxtor DiamondMax9 120gb) on Sil3112A controller incorporated on Asus A7N8X DL mainboard which has been running trouble free for 13 months.

On booting SATA bios now reports "incomplete raid set" and pressing F4 shows Disk 0 as "dropped" (Disk 1 still shown as "current")

The PC is still booting OK so presumably Disk 1 has taken over as it should.

Does the term "dropped" mean disk failure (it still appears to be spinning) or can I attempt to delete the existing mirrored array and recreate without without data loss. I'm reluctant to do this in case i lose everything off Disk 1 in the process.

If a new replacement disk is needed how should I incorporate it into the existing array. Do I need to switch the Disk 1 SATA cable from its present secondary slot to primary on the mainboard, fit the new disk, delete and recreate the mirrored set or can I just replace the defective drive with the new one and let the controller sort it.
