Bestfriends.pif (variant?) - Username: Jed - Magic Word: Please :D
Honestly didn't know forums like this were around until now...I like to think I'm a tech savvy person but appears I'm not _that_ savvy XD
I read all the intro threads (very nicely set up, btw - should do something like this for my own forum). Before getting into what I've done, I think a little background on the situation might help:
I clicked on one of my friends' profiles on AIM and they had an away message with one of the standard virus sayings. However, being somewhat unaccustomed my optical mouse, I accidentally clicked it. A program called "bestfriends.pif" (was thinking this is a variant of bestfriends.scr?) ran, and a bunch of tabs opened up in Firefox (that I closed quickly); I don't know exactly what it did, but I see in my C:\ drive, there are a bunch of files named zimmy.html, tanks.html, k.html, o.html, x.bat, ux.exe, staff.html, Ix.exe, and sun.reg. I poked around using TextPad on the files and it looks like the x.bat loads sun.reg into the registry, but there are values in there that I have no idea what they mean. I can post those up if requested.
For what I've done so far [I have not rebooted since this happened] ? I've scanned using Ad-Aware SE (latest defs. + version), Spybot S&D (latest defs. version), and a partial-scan with Norton AV. Nothing but other stuff came up with the two adware programs, and NAV didn't like staff.html and tanks.html since they were "Adware threats", but couldn't delete them.
Also used some program on the 'net called AIMFix.exe, made by this site, but to no avail: http://jayloden.com/
Then I ran over to HJT, got a log, and here it be:

I think the first thing you should do is post a current HJT log, since this one is probably out of date, and I'll get to it right away
Here's a current HJT log:

Then, you need to go to the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL), and go to the processes tab. End this process:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE
Now, go into that folder ("C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG") and rename MDM.EXE to MDM.EXE.OLD.
Reboot and post a new log.
C:\DOCUME~1\RYANMA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5.0001
Reboot into safe mode, go into C:\DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS\RYANMA~1 (your name!)\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\ and delete everything in there.

Also - Should I delete those files that are in my C:\ root? Or are we getting to that?
I can't see any more suspicious looking items in there. Do the problems seem to be gone after a reboot?
Yes, they seem to be - the only thing that concerns me is the files that supposedly loaded changes to my registry that are still in my C:\ root. The registry file that was loaded has a bunch of values in it...not sure what they do.
Other than that, I can delete those strange files - but I'm not sure exactly what they did to my Registry or any other files, for that matter. At the moment there isn't anything that seems to be wrong with my computer, though.
Let me know if anything else comes up, and definitely stick around
Been a Firefox user since 0.6 ^_^, but still need to update to SP2 one of these days. 'been afraid about my games+horror stories I hear about it.
Issue resolved!
