RESOLVED Can not use DVD-RW to back up files

edited November 2004 in Hardware
Please help! I have a brand new system (Biostar M7NCD NVIDIA nFORCE2 400 MOB; AMD Athlon XP3200; 120GBHD; 512 MB DDR; ATI 256 MB Video; DVD-RW) and it will not write to either my HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4120B or Lite-on DVDRW LDW-411S? Everything else is working fine, but I have no way to back up files...which makes me very scared since I have no backups right now? The drives are showing and I can play movies and music on both. I suspect the MOB since both drives are listed as "SCSI CdRom device" I am trying to use Nero BackItUp and it just gives me "Back up failed almost immediately". I have done nothing to MOB drivers, nor "teaked" it in any way (I am a newbie and know little about modifying computers). The only "mod" have been replacing the ribbon IDE cables with rounded ones. Thank you for any help!

do you have anything like Daemon Tools (or other cd emulating software) running? If so remove it and try again.

So when you try to select/view your drives in nero all you can see is SCSI devices? (see image)

    Jared,
Nothing is running in the background, but when I disable Nero's InCD, nothing within Nero works...and when I delete InCD, this also takes away both drives where they are not showing, nor can I use them...both drives will also show a problem icon, but still have their drivers. Nero also tells me that a CD-RW is not supported, when I know that both drives support it (Nero confirms this in their Info Tool)? Both drives show up as you pictured.
    Thanks for responding!

Any additional ideas would be very helpful. Could the DVD-RW SCSI drives require different cables other than the rounded IDE cables I bought on-line that are currently connecting them to the MOB? or could software conflict be to blame? Biostar has not responded to multiple cries for help. Thank you!

I have had a look and the Lite-on DVDRW LDW-411S is an IDE drive. Try uninstalling your Nforce drivers and downloading and installing the new ones. I have seen a similar problem and this resolved it.

Thank you, thank you! I followed your advice and downloaded the new nVidia drivers, BUT...did not install the IDE drivers (I am using the current XP ones) and Cyberlink Power2Go writer is working with Samsung CD-R disks only). But, it is not working with unused 3 year old Memorex CD-RW disks that have worked with my old ME with Nero computer?? Does this make sense regarding the drivers and the disks?? Is there any reason to install the nVidia IDE drivers, or is the saying "if it aint broke, don't fix it" appropriate? Are there disks that are "all" compatible??
Thanks again for your expertise! I look forward to hearing the answers to my questions.

Please install the nVidia IDE drivers. The XP-default are insufficient.

What is the correct procedure for installing the nVidia drivers? When I installed all nVidia drivers except the IDE drivers, I just installed the drivers over the current XP drivers. Is this correct, or do I need to uninstall the current drivers first and then install the new ones? Can someone please give me detailed instruction on how to do it the right way? I apologize for not knowing more than I do.
Thank you for your help, kindness, and quick response!

PS I am now able to write with my HL-DT-ST DVDRAM LG GSA-4120B with new disks only; when I try to re-write to any re-writable disk after erasing it, Power2Go will go to 99% and hang the system up?

Just install the full nVidia package -- other people will tell you to uninstall current drivers, I however, haven't had a problem installing packages over other packages in the 6 years I've been installing drivers myself, so I continue to do so.

Thank you, everything seems to be working now. I also updated the firmware for both opto drives. Problem solved.
