Question regarding installation of Ethernet card.

edited November 2004 in Science & Tech
I just installed a USB9700 ethernet card in my machine, and noticed in the bag with the card was a cable, a small one consisting of three wires, I noticed the connector on the card but have no idea on where that is supposed to go. The Install guide doesn't mention the cord, and it's not even listed on the contents of the box. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do with it, or can I function without it.

Appreciate feedback

    Model: USR997900
    US ROBOTICS

    :shakehead

    :)

And that would be the WOL (Wake on LAN) cable.

    Package Contents

    - U.S. Robotics 10/100 Mbps Network Card
    - Wake on LAN (WoL) cable
    - Quick Installation Guide
    - Installation CD-ROM

Which...if you don't know what that means then you aren't using that feature and probably never will. Does the NIC work? Yes? Then surf happily.

    From the USR site:

"With Wake on LAN (WoL) functionality, you can even remotely power up, or down, your computer to perform routine maintenance functions from a centralized location."

I hope it does!! I haven't tried it yet, I just got my router, so I will try it out soon. Hopefully the router is easy to install. Looks easy, just wondering if I should anticipate any problems, or advice as to the best way to utilize my firewall i.e. it's settings. Can I just turn off my firewall after the install of the router? Does one install a firewall to the router? Lot's of questions, sorry.

    Router D-Link DI-604 4 Port Broadband Router

    Thanks

Routers with a hardware firewall are good. They will not, however, block spyware or virus intrusions. Firewalls are used to prevent unauthorized access to what is/are hooked up to them.

Be sure to read the manual carefully and configure the router accordingly.
