Boffins Develop One Terabit Per Second Switch
A Japanese association has created an optical switch capable of speeds over one terabit a second.
Source: The InquirerAccording to today's Nikkei Business Daily, the optical switch was created by the Femtosecond Technology Research Association (FESTA). Its speed makes it capable of handling a vast amount of data. The paper said it's made of a 50 layer stack of layers of aluminium-gallium-arsenide and aluminium-arsenide. The switch can pick up the optical signals by tiny changes in electric fields caused by light. Although the device FESTA has made works, commercial versions won't be ready until 2008, said the paper.
