Weird random program icon changes

Hi,

My program icons are turning into Swiss cheese. I'm not kidding. I foolishly tried opening a game crack that I downloaded with Kazaa. It's icon was a wedge of Swiss cheese. It wouldn't open, which didn't concern me very much, but now about a third of the programs on my computer, apparently at random, have this same wedge of Swiss cheese for an icon. It's annoying enough as it is but it makes me worry there's something wrong worse than annoying icon changes. I've run Ad-aware and Spyware, but they didn't find anything more than the usual cookies, and I did a virus scan with Norton Utilities that came up with nothing. I learned of something called TweakIU which supposedly restores icons, but that didn't change anything.

Some of these programs seem to be OK, but when I open Word I get a message saying that ScanMgr.dll is missing, and when I open Dell Musicmatch, I get a message saying it can't load the equalize.dll. Both programs seem to work normally despite these error messages.

I posted this in general software, but the more I think of it the more I'm convinced this has to be a virus or something like that.

Thanks for any help.

    Hi,

Here you go. Actually, I was way to optimistic in my initital post about these programs being unaffected. All the affected programs either won't open or only open after a variety of messages relating to various missing or corrupted dlls. Apparently, even programs whose icons weren't changed, like Word and Musicmatch, are affected because I get dll messages with them too.

    Thanks

    Hi,

I'm desperate for your help. This is spreading and has already infected my back up drives. I have one clue. I discovered that I have an invisible folder in my C drive and back up drives called MouseMX which is filled with icons--not the Swiss cheese icons but the originals--including, I think, all the programs that have been affected. This must be it because what happened originally was I downloaded a demo of Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and the icon was a mouse, and then when I tried openening the .exe file that was supposedly a crack for Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, the demo icon, and countless other icons, all turned into the Swiss cheese icon. Ah, the wages of sin. That's what I get for dabbling in crack, I know. PLEASE HELP and I will never do it again.

Can you make a list of the files in the mousemx folder? According to Google, MouseMX is part of a Bluetooth Optical Mouse, but it may actually be your problem. We will need a list of files inside to determine if it is malware

    Hi,

Thanks for answering. I wish I could give you a list, but there are are now 566 files in it--every one of them an .exe file--1.3 GB. Is there a way to turn this into a list? There isn't any doubt that what's in this folder is what's being replaced by the cheese icons. And I now have figured out that it isn't just the icons that are being replaced but the entire file. The actual files are being put into the invisible MouseMX file and replaced with 60mb files with a cheese icon. Everyone is exactly 60mb. I found some obscure reference on the internet about a viris called One_half with a cheese icon, but that's all. I ran another virus program called F-Prot, and it came up with nothing, but there HAS to be a virus or some other form of malware at work. This is sooooo bizarre. I'm at my wits end and really appreciate any help from anyone.

    Thanks,

    Carl
