edited November 2004 in Hardware
HI
i have just bought a new samsung sata sp1614c 160GB hard drive.

i already run one hard drive but was looking to upgrade and keep the smaller one as a storage area.

The new hard drive has been installed and formated but i can't load windows xp on it as when it's installing it comes up saying no hard drive detetected which is baffling me as when i connect my old hard drive it's there and shows up.

any help would be gladley appreciated
thanks

Make sure the partition is set active and you need to load SATA drivers by pressing F6 during XP's installation first screen.

Yeah have the SATA drivers with you when installation. It will say something about pressing F6 right at the beginning of the XP install. Press F6 and load the drivers and continue the installation. Then when you get to choose which hdd it will be there.

Um, look in your CD, in My Computer on another Windows box. Find SATA chip drivers, see if there is a floppy maker program with them (some mfrs just tell you to copy a few files to floppy, some give you an archive that makes a floppy when you download). aAso, look in your MSI mobo's manual, the base SATA drivers for the XP load might be mentioned there (in this case, this can be not HD drivers, rather SATA chip drivers and the manual might tell you to copy one or two files from CD to floppy and tell you where on CD to find them-- hint, if no printed manual, again on another windows box, look for a big .pdf file and open it with Acrobat Reader which is also on the CD, look in the installation sections and see what the manual says).

What about the promise drivers on the SM server? Do any of those work for you?
