I am looking for a website that will provide a way of hosting .pdf files for my business' customers so that they can have a secure login. I want a predeveloped solution for hosting around 2-3gigs of information in an online accessible storage. Any ideas or leads?

So, please clarify: You need individual people to have a secure login to some kind of interface to download PDF files, and then I'm assuming you need some sort of administrative access to add/delete PDF files, users, and permissions....

    Does that sound right?

Yes, I need the ability to host pdf files online (7.2gb to be exact) and allow customers (each with ther own login) to be able to securely download the files. There does need to be an administrator function to add more pdfs as needed and create and delete users.

I imagine an FTP site would be optimum but then your clients would have to have FTP software to access.

We have our downloads section set up where a code has to be input before the download begins. Doing something similar with assigned codes for each user would most definitely involve some custom coding.

I know Shorty is a wiz at that but you'd have to hire him.

Most ISP's can offer a secure web area for a nominal fee. A company I worked for used to do this when we made video ads for customers, we would upload a small Quicktime or AVI preview for the customer to download and approve. You needed a username or password to access the secure web area. The drawback to this is that you only got one username / password, and once a customer logged in, he could also see any other files that were there.

An FTP is the better way to go, as each customer can have a unique login, and be locked into specific directories with only their files visible, and they can access the FTP through their browser (they do NOT need FTP software, you can do it through IE or Firefox or any other current browser, which makes it easy as you can send the customers an ftp link as a URL, they just click and login.) Your best bet, in my opinion, would be to establish a static IP address, run cheap but reliable FTP software (Serv-U gets my vote) and manage it yourself on a server. That is what my former company does now, they share our FTP server with us (we are related companies, same owner so we do things like this together to save costs.) An FTP is easy to set up, inexpensive, secure, and gives you dozens of other uses.

If you want to try this out on my FTP to see it work, PM me.

This site has a very nice interface, but they are a higher cost.
Unlimited users and unlimited bandwidth though which is very nice.

You're probably going to have to have something custom written. As far as I know, there is no packaged app that does this. I am probably wrong, but that's my gut feeling.

Don't be daunted though. The code to do this wouldn't be hard for a good PHP programmer. If you need hosting, PM me and I'll quote you some prices. There are a couple of professional-grade PHP developers that hang out on this site. If you post a request for such an app, you might get a lower price than you would expect.

My university uses a piece of software called BSCW. It allows users to have basically a folder system with secure access and such. I'll see if I can find anything out about it as obviously I can't give you my Uni access to get in...

Here it is... heh, site is German though...
