Search-town/hyperlinkschange to porn...

First timer here. (Windows XPhome Sp1a, no antivirus software installed)
Windows Update ran bi-monthly, current as of today.
Ran: Ad Aware, SpybotSD, Adware Away, Stinger.
Adware Away helped get rid of "About Blank" hijack.
All at some point say I'm clean, but after reboot and IE opened, a few clicks later I am redirected either to "Search Town", or porn. Plus hyperlinks on web pages turn to porn links.
All this from opening one wrong site...(in the wrong neighborhood, if you know what I mean).

Hope you can help!

Download HijackThis from here & unzip it into it's own, permanent folder.
If you have anything disabled in MsConfig, please re-enable it/them and reboot.
Start HJT & press the scan button. When the scan is finished the scan button will change to save. Save the log to a text file, copy the entire contents of the text file & paste it into the body of your post.

Please go here and have these files scanned.

    C:\windows\vcpdll.exe
    C:\windows\wutop.exe

If they come up as bad, end process on them in task manager then delete them manually.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O2 - BHO: sr - {5742F79A-1D91-42c4-990C-B46CF55A6478} - C:\WINDOWS\ssysprs.dll

These two only if they came up bad in the previous scan.
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cmsound] c:\windows\vcpdll.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [winltmpv] c:\windows\wutop.exe

    Reboot and post another log.

Are we close to putting a checkmark "solved" here? IE browser seems ok. (for now?)
When this happened initially 2 days ago, I searched for newly created .dll files and these came up:
    griverlcb.dll
    griverlcs.dll
    httpfilter.dll
    minedep.dll
    ssysprs.dll
    bridge.dll
    windrv.dll
    ....they are not there now.

I use this 'puter mainly as an Audio Workstation. It is recommended that I keep no anti-virus running in the background, as this can create audio glitches and eats up resources.

Is it about time I create a dual boot of XP? One for net only, one for Audio only? Or can I just turn on anti-virus as needed? I have no experience with antiV programs.

    And/or quit using IExplorer?

I take it back, those .dll 's are still there.

You need to right click on those dll's and get the properties of them. No manufacturer is a good sign they are malware. Bridge.dll is a definite baddy.
I would run the AV every time you were on-line and disable it as needed.
  • edited November 2004
    deleted those DLL files.
Thanks ever so much for the help. I'm posting one last log, and if there are any more tweaks, or things to look for, please let me know.

No, Things are smooth. Thanks to all.
    RESOLVED.

p.s....Do Spyware blocking programs conflict with eachother?
........and should I choose just one?
......and are they always running in the background when not running an internet connection?

No, they do not conflict with each other. One usually just adds to what another one put in (usually to the registry). Use as many as you like, as long as you don't use any ones that are blacklisted. Some spyware blockers are .exes which will most likely always run in the background. Others, such as my own, Spyware Shooter, are .reg files, which you just run once and it never runs in the background again, automatically blocking bad sites from IE using the Registry.
