Cant open more than one IE explorer window

edited November 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi,

This is my first time using a forum so if I'm doint something wrong or have posted in the wrong area please let me know. Here's the prob. I can't open more than one window at a time in IE explorer. Not even if I right-click on a link and select "open target in a new window". In my internet options I dont have the "reuse windows" option selected either. What can I do?

Thanks

You did everything right, as far as posting goes :)

First of all, what version of windows and what version of IE do you have?

Have you made certain that it's not just condencing the new IE windows into the same taskbar entry? Try going into your taskbar options and turning off 'group similar taskbar buttons'.

If that's not it: When did it start doing this? Was it right after an install or an update of some kind?

yeah...I just changed that taskbar setting but it is doing the same thing. If I'm not mistaken this may have started a couple of weeks ago just after running spybot, but going back to a restore point before that would be even worse because the problem I was having before that was that ie explorer would automatically close when clicking on newlinks due to some ad programs. that was even more frustrating than this. I just tried to run ad aware se personal and it hung before finishing the scan. Also...I'd like to post my hijack log but I'm so new to this I don't even now where to download the hijackthis program....I am to the point that I am considering doing a reformat or at least an in place re-install of windows but I'm still hoping someone out there know how to fix this explorer thing.

    Thanks!!

    Hi!

What happens when you try to open another IE window? Have you tried using the address bar in 'my documents' or 'my computer'?

You can download HijackThis v1.98.2 from here

First off I'd just like to say that I think you guys who respond so quickly to these threads are Awesome!

Secondly...it's wierd. I can open as many browser windows that I want using the address bar in 'my docs' or 'my comp' but when I try to open another browser window using either the ie explorer shortcut or by right clicking on a target and selecting 'open target in new window', two things always happens; the current ie browser closes and a the selected target, be it my homepage or the new link open up in the new browser, but without out fail the page I was on ( and usually one that I wanted to keep open!) always closes....

    Any Ideas??

    thanks!

yeah, use firefox, then you can open up all the windows you want in new tabs without cluttering your desktop.

Sounds cool. Now even though I might sound like an idiot asking...what is firefox? and is that going to solve the actual problem of ie explorer messing up?

    thanks yet again

My bad! Mozilla's firefox is an alternative web-browser that is superior to IE.

    You can download it <a href="http://www.mozilla.org/">here</a&gt;

As for fixing the problem with IE, it won't really.....but at least you won't be using IE.

But i am sure someone here can fix your IE problem too. Have you checked out the HVT section? You will need to use Hijack This and post a log. Check out this thread to get started.

One thing I'd add to the other excellent suggestions is that you may have an aggresive pop-up stopper doing what you describe. If you are running any sort of pop-up blocker you might want to check the settings.

As far as Spyware, anyone here can tell you that if you haven't checked for it recently you are almost certain to have some sort of it on your computer. Regardless of what else you do you should check that out.

    Welcome to Short-Media. :)
