I've just bought a Motorola E1000 3G phone which can play MP4 movie files. However I need software to convert my mpg clips to MP4 format, can anyone recommend a good program, preferably freeware.

Cheers

Jim

    See my XViD tutorial and change the final .AVI files to .MP4. ;) Structurally, XViD and DiVX are mpeg4 files. If you use the proper settings, you can get them to MPEG-standardized options, but it means using a fairly sparse feature set. When you're done, you can convert the extension of an AVI to .MP4 as they mean the same thing. It'd help to know exactly what features your phone can support in an mpeg4 file, but I've posted fairly safe settings that work on many Nokia and Sony phones.

    Use AutoGK and in the advanced button, tell the maximum width to be that of the longest dimension of your phone's display.

    Use these options in the XViD encoder configuration:

    25 FPS
    2 pass
    b-frames on
    adaptive quantization on
    quantization type type=> mpeg custom> very low bitrate (If you need this quant matrix, I can post it).
    Global Motion Compensation off
    qpel off
    vhq mode=4
    msp=6
    chroma motion=on
    trellis=on
    chroma optimizer enabled

    Don't define an audio track in AutoGK as it doesn't support the proper settings for ideal audio on a mobile phone which is 32kbs/16KHz mp3. To do that, run the source audio through a program called BeSweet (You'll need the GUI and the program from www.doom9.org, also get SSRC.exe while you're there). Run the wizard.

    Select your source audio, set the audio output type to mp3, set the bitrate to 32. Under more options, set the mp3 preset to CBR. Set the SSRC sampling rate to 16000. Set the output stereo mode to mono.

    When you're done, use a program called AVIMux to mix your AVI file and your MP3 file. Rename the final file to .MP4.

    If you want a full-out tutorial (Which gives me an idea) -- First tutorial for movies on thy mobile phone! Golly gee. Good thing I have a ton of free time coming up. You know what?

    Give me until sunday at the latest (I'm starting right now), and you'll have a full tutorial to follow.

    Excellent, thanks thrax, I hoped you'd see this thread, been looking for an excuse to try your guide out & this is it. I'll try it tomorrow & report back.

    *edit* I'll wait for the full mobile phone tutorial & try that. :)
    Cheers
