edited November 2004 in Spyware & Virus Removal
ok so i was reading the article on getting rid of spyware and did all the searches and it didnt find to much since i have been using spybot S&D, but my question is the person said that a computer not running anything should have 10-20 process running, but mine has 41, why? also could people just take a quick look at my HJT log?

I am not the expert on these files, but I found a tip from someone once:

Google the file including the extension; If it is a noxious file, you will get immediate (top of the list) hits from forums such as this one that tell you the horrors of this file, and usually the cure...if not you will quickly realize the threat the file holds...the hits will be relatively benign.

The person who told you this is incorrect. Most people running Windows XP Service Pack will have at least 30 or so process running. Windows itself uses around 20. Then throw in:

    - anti-virus (1 to 3 processes)
    - any hardware like Printers or Digital Cameras that may have apps running for auto-updates, etc
    - software firewalls
    - MS office background app
    - software auto-updaters (Real Player, Quicktime, etc)
    - video card apps
    - sound card apps
    - auto-started apps like Instant Messengers

and all kind of other things. My computer has about 45 processes without any programs visibly running.

Here's a quick look at yours:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsgSys.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
    C:\Program Files\NavNT\vptray.exe
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\WCESCOMM.EXE
    C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe

    (All Windows stuff)

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe
    C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe
    C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main\ATISched.EXE

    (ATI video card apps)

    C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\acsd.exe

    (AOL Instant Messenger)

    C:\Program Files\NavNT\defwatch.exe
    C:\Program Files\NavNT\rtvscan.exe

    (Norton Anti-virus)

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe

    (Zone Alarm)

    C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 6\DragToDisc\DrgToDsc.exe
    C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 6\AudioCentral\RxMon.exe
    C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 6\AudioCentral\Playlist.exe

(CD Burning Software running in background)

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

    (Autoupdater for Realplayer)

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
    C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe
    C:\johns programs\Office\OSA.EXE

(various software, self explanatory when you read the names)

    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Alex\Desktop\HijackThis.exe

    (Internet Explorer and Hijack This.)

So, your system looks clean of any privacy problems, and the apps running are all safe.

    Hope this helps.
