Desktop Items Gone; nothing works

edited November 2004 in Hardware
I ran Ad-Aware the other night and there were 500 or so critical objects, mostly ezula virus and VX2, so I went to delete them, but it froze on the "deleting selections" screen for a long time, so I closed it and rebooted, now nothing shows up when it loads. It only shows my wallpaper and when I use the mouse to click, it doesn't work as well. When I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, it shows that nothing is running. It is Windows ME. I've tried to reboot into safe mode, but again, it stalls for a little while, like something is loading, but nothing pops up on the monitor. I can hit "DEL" when the computer is rebooting to go into setup, but from there, I have no idea what the CMOS settings, etc. are

I'm guessing the problem may be with something I deleted from the registry (some times the stuff on ad-aware doesn't delete, so I go into regedit and manually delete the files they have listed. Some were a folder called Interface, perhaps this is why nothing shows up anymore?). It looks like the start programs are loading when I start up the computer, but nothing shows up. I can move my mouse around the screen, but I can't right click it at all. It's like everything is hidden behind the monitor screen if that makes any sense. Any ideas how to restore to old settings, etc? The only thing I can do now is hold "DEL" when it's loading to get to that setup screen and "CTRL" to get the 4 options of booting into Normal Mode, Logged mode, Safe Mode, or Step by Step confirmation.

Any help would be appreciated. I'll be at this computer for a little bit, so I can try and remedies you suggest on my other computer.
