Internet problems

righto, I recently moved into a new flat and have set up my network which looks like this:

PC1---\
...........Hub1
Hub2----router---net
PC2---/.........Server--/

router is netgear 834G.

Never had any problems at my old place, but then all the PCs were plugged into the router, no hubs in the way. Now however, MSN messenger and IRC on PC1 & PC2 (both apps on both PCs) lose their connection randomly, sometimes every 5 minutes, sometimes can be okay for hours. Battlefield vietnam on PC1 crashes every so often which I'm guessing is related to the network errors. However, when I run a continuous ping from PC1 to an internet IP it shows no packet loss even when MSN disconnects. So, any ideas where the problem is? any suggestions would be appreciated.

edit: nm, went and 'wiggled' all my network connections and the problem seems to have gone away.....guess I need to re-cable

don't understand why I wasn't showing any packet loss though. My ping spiked to 500ms at times, would that cause MSN & IRC to drop? Anyone?

When you say your ping spiked, is that while playing a game or running a ping test? A cable going bad or being bad from day 1 can cause weird problems. Kind of like having a bad IDE cable, sometimes you will have problems and sometimes you will not.

BTW: Why did you go from one router to a router, and two hubs?

on a ping test, didn't actually see it spike but I noticed my 'worst ping' suddenly jumped to around 500 on most of the hops. The average ping didn't jump by much though, so I assume it was just a one off occurence

purely due to the geography of the flat. Also because I had a spare 24 port enterprise type hub sitting around with lots of flashy lights that I wanted to use for something :)
