Active X Controls can be bad.

Well, I am good at removing spyware via giving online instructions, but can I do it on a live computer? That's what I test myself every few months to find out. I sometimes purposely install spyware on this computer and attempt to remove it (always resulting in success, despite the removal time :p). Luckily the last few "tests" have been on my friend's computers, which have spyware installed on them. Well, no more friend's computers to fix, so I decided to install IBIS on mine today. I uninstalled Spyware Shooter and got rid of my HOSTS file. Searching for lyrics, an active X control comes up, so I accept. ONE ACTIVE X CONTROL and look at the Ad-Aware Results:

Note: I took off part of the screen to reduce the file size.

So, after 3 reboots, 2 Ad-Aware Scans, 1 HJT scan, and around an hour, I finally seem to have gotten rid of this beast. Ad-Aware just detected 130 items though. I'll reboot after I post this and do another scan, which will hopefully turn out clean. I'm not getting the toolbar anymore.

I still have one problem though. My "links" toolbar is missing. It somehow got crunched into the address bar line while removing this. Yes, I know, I shouldn't use IE. But I doubt that Firefox is comptable with this computer (Windows ME, 32MB SDRAM, 6.96GB hard drive, 566MHz Celeron processor). If anyone knows how to get my toolbar back that would be appreciated. Hopefully its just a simple registry edit or something.

So the moral of the story kids, is do not install Active X controls. You never know what might happen to your computer.

And just for the record, while IBIS was running, it dragged my computer down to 65% system/gdi/user resources.

Is it as simple as going to the view button and putting a tick next to Links?

No, I have the links bar, but it's crammed into the line with the address bar on it. The button is checked.

If you unlock the toolbars can you drag the links button to another bar?

Thank you! The Links bar is on it's own line now. I never thought of trying that.
