CPU not performing

edited November 2004 in Hardware
HI, I was not very satisfied with my Pentium IV 3.06GHz, so I tested it with Sandra 2005 ALU Benchmarking and it seems to run as a Pentium III 700MHz.

This the result of the test (confirmed also by CPUBench):

Dhrystone ALU 1991 MIPS (instead of 7870)
Whetstone FPU/iSSE2 714/1298 MFLOPS (instead of 2190/4036)

Does anyone know why ? What can I do?

I'm running Windows XP SP2, on a M/d ASUS P4PE with 1Gb RAM DDR-SDRAM 166 MHz, Chipset Intel i845PE, RAID 0 Fixed Disk.

I also tried to overclock to 3.3GHz with a real little speed increase

    WELL, three things:

First, what OS is running while you are doing this??? XP will be best at really using an HT processor to the fullest. Next best is Win2000. 98 will limp badly, Me also.

Second, did you bench with nothing else you can stop from running and not break your windows version turned off or stopped?? To get a true benchmark value reading, the cores need to BOTH NOT be busy while benching.

Third, to Windows a benchmarker will get one virtual core's worth of resources at most, not BOTH cores, UNLESS you tell windows to give the benchmarker high priority AND use BOTH cores for affinity. Now, Windows sees your HT box as a 2 CPU box, and by default does not give it BOTH cores worth of processing unless the benchmarker itself can run as an HT program.

Last, and this is one way to get slow results, get the latest becnhmarker for Sandra, and try the latest version BAPCO benchmarks also. the latest BAPCo benchmarks CAN HT benching and adjust to 2 CPUs present from Windows point of view. PC MAG's labs switched to BAPCO for HT benching, and uses some of the Sandra Pro benching also with teh LATEST version of Sandra Pro. they are calling many other benchers obsolete for testing HT capable processors, including the benchers developed for them. I know of no GOOD and FREE HT CPU bencher that is written to preform HT benching right now.

My guess is your results come from a combo of those three thngs and possibly slower than optimal RAM being present or RAM not being set right also.

What type of RAM do you have? As well as what motherboard?
