Clean OS install on New Dell Inspiron 8600 lappy question.

Wow this thing gets hot...! So the system keeps locking up and loseing its wireless connection after its been on and running for a while so I reboot and all seems to be ok for a while...

So I was fairly sure that part of the problem was heat so I dove inside and spatted on a dab or two of AS-5 on the CPU and the graphics card cpu and mem...

Seems to be better but I tihnk I want to redo the system.

I noticed when I was looking at disk management that Dell set up a 47mb FAT partition, a 3.5gb FAT32 partition, and a 24.39gb NTFS partition.

I have no idea why they did that but I have had this thing long enough for any trial software be over now and I want to just start over with the programs on it that I want and none of that trial crap...

My question is, I have the XP Pro disk that came with the system but I'm wondering if anybody has redone their system with their XP for Dell disk?

Is the disk an actual XP install disk or a Mirror of the system?

If I use the XP Pro for Dell disk and reformat the HD will it setup all of those partitions on its own?

Can I slipstream my Dell XP Pro disk and SP2 into a new install disk?

Has anybody wiped a newly bought Dell system and reinstalled the OS?

Does Dell have any issues with reinstalls and my warranty on my system?

Thanks,

My question is, I have the XP Pro disk that came with the system but I'm wondering if anybody has redone their system with their XP for Dell disk?

I have had the extreme misfortune of doing it to a friend's computer, yes.
Is the disk an actual XP install disk or a Mirror of the system?

Something like that. The FAT32 partitions at the head of the drive are a series of utilities, and more importantly an image of the OEM system configuration. Using the XP for Dell will move the image back onto your primary install partition.
If I use the XP Pro for Dell disk and reformat the HD will it setup all of those partitions on its own?

    The partitions will remain.
Can I slipstream my Dell XP Pro disk and SP2 into a new install disk?

Possible, but to me it seems technically improbable. The disc is nothing like a full Windows XP disc. It's a hodgepodge of Dell engineering and real XP material.
Has anybody wiped a newly bought Dell system and reinstalled the OS?

With the dell disc, everything was returned to its OEM state. With a real XP disc, there were no problems.
Does Dell have any issues with reinstalls and my warranty on my system?

Unless you're a certified Dell system specialist, you'll void your warranty.

    Humm.....

Thrax, what would you suggest then?

It sounds like I might be close to the edge of breach of warranty with the adding of the AS-5 to the CPU and GPU....

What if I aquired a copy of XP pro and just used that to install the OS on the lappy....?

would there be any install or hardware issues?

I mean, XP should install all the drivers and stuff for the system right?

A Lappy mob uses pretty much the same hardware drivers as a reg system right?

I realize that if I had a problem I would have to reinstall their disk.

Oh, stupid question my lappy battery has what looks like LEDs that are supposed to show charge level... are they supposed to be lit?

    Thanks,

A standard Windows XP disc should work just fine. :) Technically speaking there shouldn't be any issues that couldn't be resolved, if any were to arise.

I don't know anything about the LEDs. Sorry. :(
