I am building a computer for a friend, and I just bought a new wd 200gb ide hdd for the primary drive. I put everything together and booted into BIOS, then i set the boot order and restarted so i can install xp from the cd. When it comes to format time, the hdd only shows up as 131062mb.

Where's is the extra 60gb??? Doesn't this have something to do with sp1 or 2? My xp cd is old and doesn't have either sp1 or 2 embedded.

If i continue to install xp now, can i get the other part of the drive back later in windows? Or do i have to do something pre-xp install? BIOS update maybe?

You'll need to install SP1. The rest of the disk should show up. SP1 enabled 40 bit addressing for volumes above 136gb.

After installing all neccesary xp updates, i found the missing 58.32gb partition under disk mangement. I have formatted it, but how can i join the 2 partitions so i have one giant partition?

You'll need to use Partition Magic 8 or a similar program to join a blank partition to an existing, formatted, and used partition.

Yeah....that is what i thought, but i was hoping someone knew of a workaround instead of using third party software. Stupid MS should have included this ability with xp, maybe longhorn...

would an xp cd w/ sp2 embedded allow for the full drive to show during initial install?

MS should send this to the DoJ to porve that users do want bundled utility software. However, the competition could use it as proof that the extra software includes kills their business.
