Half-Life 2 Benchmarks

The Doom benchmark thread became a very good resource after a while. Here are 3 recorded sequences that Gamespot recorded and since they are free for download, i take it that they are not copyrighted or something like that.

To run a benchmark demo:

Open HL 2 with the console by adding -console in the shortcut that you use.
My HL 2 shortcut looks like this: "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220 -console

You only have to use the console flag once if you enable the console in the game. Go to where the keyboard option is and go advanced. There you can check the Console option.

With the console still opened, you can bind the console key to any button on your keyboard. I prefer the F1 key for example. Type this into the console:

bind "f1" "toggleconsole"

Just change the f1 to whatever you like. The console defaults to the tilde key, but a lot of peeps with non-english or non-US keyboard configuration have problem getting the console with the default key.

Download the 3 files i'm attaching, rename them to .rar and unpack them to the following section of your harddrive:

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\mackanz\half-life 2\hl2

Note that the mackanz part is my username so your username is different.

Start the game and run the console and type the following line:

timedemo followfreeman

Just change the followfreeman to any of the other 2 demos to run them.
After the benchmark, you will see the results in the console.

The settings i used was the following:

Everything at max quality in the driver except for vsync and truform which is all the way to the left. The AA and AF option is set to Application Preference.

1280X1024 at 4XAA and 8XAF gave me these results:

followfreeman: 50.41
routekanal: 101
waterhazard: 48.42

A64 3200 at 8X270 with 8,4,4, cas 2.5 settings, 1GB ram
Radeon X800 XT PE at stock clocks and the 4.12 Beta driver.

I have a felling i could improve those scores a lot and that's what i aim this thread at. Run your benchmark at your prefered settings and chime in with them here. Post a few tweaks or 2.

Cheers!

I ran the time demos on two different machines. Both were run at 1024 x 768 all settings at high no AA and trilinear filtering (*recomended settings for your machine)
Both machines have 9800 Pro 128's By ATI with cat 4.12 at stock speeds

    AMD mobile 2500+ @2505mhz 200 x 12.5 2x256 pc3200

    Follow Freeman...38.6
    RouteKanal.......115.88
    Waterhazard.......39.82

    P4 3.0 @ 3.0 2x 512 Pc3200
    .....................1024x768........1280 x 1024
    Follow Freeman....38.73..............35.44
    RouteKanal........118.14..............86.37
    Waterhazard........33.01..............40.46

I just reran the demos @1280 x 1024 which is the native resolution on my LCD monitor

    scott,

thanks and very interesting. I'm glad to see that the amount of ram isn't as important as with Doom 3. Ok, load times will be cut a lot with a gig compared to 512mb, but the Gameplay in Doom 3 suffered with 512mb and we got lower gameplay performance.

What puzzles me a little is that your waterhazard score is higher on higher resolution on your P4 rig.

I'm gonna see if i can find the normal vga cable for my LCD so that i can use higher resolution than the 1280X1024 resolution which is the native resolution on all 17 and 19 inch lcd screens.

I have a feeling Half-Life 2 loves BH5 ram that's clocked high on tight timings.

Recommended settings will be different for everyone as it's based on each individual's hardware, so benchmark results from different machines will be impossible to compare fairly. Why not just choose settings and stick with them?

I recommend 1024x768 w/ all details maxed. No AA or AF, vsync off.

The game looks a LOT better with AA, though, SMJ.

    FollowFreeman: 41.09 fps
    routekanal: 89.79 fps
    waterhazard: 32.89 fps

    ouch....

    2600+ @ 2.3ghz | 1gb ram | sapphire 9800Pro 128mb w cat 4.11's
    1024x768 2xAA 2XAF all details maxed

    off to tweak.

None of the demos work... said something about an outdated engine. Am I doing something wrong here? Those files posted above just have the same files in them, when I extract it just overwrites.
