Folding had to close.

Twice in the last 3 days I came home, turned on my monitor, and there was a message saying folding@home had to close because it encountered a problem. Both times it was in the middle of a work unit that I was not there to see start.

?

Does folding auto-restart itself when this happens?

Could PC Anywhere control it and restart it if I was out of town for a few days or a week?

    if it's doing that, that means your computer is not stable.

    I do have my system (barton 2500+) overclocked to 10 X 200 at stock voltages. Could that be it? Perhaps I should move the Vcore up a notch?

    According to CPU-Z, when my BIOS screen says the Vcore is 1.65, CPU-Z says it's 1.600 volts, with the occassional dip to 1.584 volts.

    I moved the Vcore to 1.675 volts, and CPU-Z says it's 1.616-1.632 volts.

    That's with folding 5.03 running and the display on.

    Could you go into your Folding@Home folder and open the file that says, fahlog.txt or something simiar. It will have a log of what happened. Find the area, copy it, and post it here.

    It sounds like it is unstable, some WUs are just bad. Keep at it tho.

    It's not stable. You need to either crank up your voltage or lower your FSB.

    Should I do anything with the memory voltage? I raised the Vcore from 1.65 to 1.675, although CPU-Z says it went from 1.600 to 1.616/1.632 volts.

    Winbond Hardware Doctor 2.70 shows the Vcore changing between 1.65-1.66 volts.

    I'll give it a day or 2 like this and see if it screws up again.

    Nothing is wrong. Its on the same WU. It never restarted. If it was unstable it would crash the WU and get another. But the whole log is working on the same WU.

    You logged off or something to pause the work being done. FAH is fine.

    If it is still on that wu, and it barfs again, tehn I would dump the work file and the queue and let it start in fresh with a new wu.

    I didn't do anything to the computer, I wasn't even home. Perhaps my Norton SystemWorks 2003 was updating its antivirus files or scanning or something.

    I kind of doubt that the wu was unstable, more like your machine was marginally unstable. Is your mobo a NF7S by any chance? If so, it's very common for them to undervolt the cpu like you are seeing. Just bump the vcore up until you see a nice stable 1.65-1.70 v with MBM or Hardware Doctor while folding and see how it goes. Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to bump the vdimm up some too. I regularly set my vdimm to 2.8-2.9v on my rigs; it won't harm the memory.

    Nothing is unstable. If it was unstable it wouldnt say paused. If it was unstable the WU would have started over, and it didnt.

    For some reason FAH paused for some reason. Did you log out or something?

    The MB is an NF7, version 2. Not a 7S, just a plain NF7.

    It has a Barton core Athlon XP 2500+, week 31 unlocked CPU.

    No one logged it off or did anything else to it. The computer was home alone.

    What version of the client are you running, Tim? I've never seen the paused deal come up before on any of my machines. :scratch: Are you running version 5.xx, either console or GUI versions? If so, have you configured it telling it to pause if on battery? They added that option for laptop use but I've never used that personally so I can't say if answering "yes" to that option with a desktop machine would make it pause folding for some reason. :scratch:

    It's 5.03 graphical, first choice on the list, and it is not set to pause on battery.

    Hell Tim, that's got me stumped too. :confused: All I can say is to try folding with the vcore bumped up to what is should actually be as reported by the hardware doctor and also bumping the vdimm volts up some and see how she folds. Hopefully that will keep your machine running and folding normally. :)
