Cannot play audio cd's in windows

Recently I have not been able to play my audio cd's with WMP (among other players, I have tried WMP, Winamp, PowerDVD, CDex etc.)
In WMP 10 I receive this error:
"the selected file has a scheme that is not recognised by windows"
I have tried reinstalling WMP
I have tried uninstalling my cd drives several times
I have tried reconfiguring deamon tools, apparently it didn't like the emulated drive to be the first drive.
Yesterday evening I could play audio cd's after messing around with settings in deamon tools. (deactivating the emulation)
But again today it doesn't work, and I have not changed a thing since yesterday. :bawling:
I am getting quite frustrated.

In WMP-
Tools>Options>File types- is the right format checked?
In Windows Explorer- Tools> Folder Options> File Types- is deamon set as default player for the offending file type? I don't know if this would matter, but you never know...
Good luck- that would be frustrating...
