Monitor problems/wires/or something else.

edited December 2004 in Hardware
Hi all im having some difficulty with a problem, as i got home i turned on the comp and noticed my screen just show colored signals or something.. as if it were a testscreen i dont see dos booting or windows not any of that..
so i scratched my head and asked around if someone used my comp..some one did..although i can't find out what exactly happened..
so i just started pulling out all the plugs / cables after shut off my comp1..cleaned contacts from the wires even took out 3D/vidcard en set them all back again this had no positive result, then i turned off my comp again and tried to press all plugs just a tiny bit further in or just move a little bit hoping it would work, and still nothing, after that i took my monitor and plugged it in on my other comp2 and it worked just fine.
my comp1 boots normally also not seeing any msg like: no signal something :wtf:

My question is what else i can try cause i have no other options i can think of in order to make my final judgement enlighten me please.

I use a: iiYama model no: S900MT1
( not sure if this info is something u need or should be posted )

Thx in advance, Ginh.

Well, monitor works on other computer, so is not monitor or any cable hardwired into monitor (not plugged in, wired in so it cannot be unplugged). Therefore, is possibly an extension cable, a cable plugged in if monitor has not cable hardwired to it for video or an extension cable, possibly a KVM if you have one of those, or a video card that is damaged from overheating or that has gotten PARTLY loose in its socket inside computer box.

So, is there a cable coming from each computer that you plug into the monitor(not power cable, video cable)??? Is there any chance video cable has a bent pin in it if yes each computer has its own video cable that is plugged into monitor???? When you cleaned the contacts, did you get the excess cleaner off, and what kind of chemical did you use???? A pin-to-pin short can cause squirrelly display, so can a video card malfunctioning, so can a cable that has been chewed by a cat (don't laugh TOO HARD, a friend had one cat, two computers (he kept those), three monitors he trashed due to cat eating insulation off the hardwired video cable, and finally the cat got a new home elsewhere, with someone who had no computer, whereupon cat ate that person's vacumm cleaner cord insulation and got turned over to humane society).

Hi Straight_Man, lol at cat..what a burden he was :)

The hardwired cable ( using rectangle shaped plug wth 14 pins ) this one i plugged into my other comp to test it, and worked.
there's like another cable for monitor using thick block plug in the back of the monitor ( which u have to plug in and put otherside of cable into contact for power ) this one has been swapped with the one from the other comp. these two methods on 2nd comp gotten my monitor to work just fine.

I use a Geforce4 MX440-SE 128MB.. and not even old, this one doesnt use any cooler ( not sure how to determine when this card has been overheated, and bent pins ? is that inside the slot where the Vidcard has been put in ?)
Therefore, is possibly an extension cable, a cable plugged in if monitor has not cable hardwired to it for video or an extension cable, possibly a KVM if you have one of those
(I'm Dutch this one is pretty tough to understand also, i don't have much computer knowledge and technical comp terms so bare with me please.)
as mentioned above i haven't used any other specific cable other than the common used cables: one that is stuck in the back of monitor that i put in to my other comp and i just left 1 cable that should go into the back of my monitor with a block looking thing, that one i swapped with the one from the other comp ( for power i think ). However.. this doesn't really tell me if either 1 of these cables doesn't work right..
also one other strange feature that occured..upon startup i do see some lights flicker on my keyboard and usually after comp is done starting up, i should be able to see it work when i press NUMLOCK in order to see the leds light up etc.. but this is not the case either.. no responding at all
    Wednesday 1, new attempts:
Hi all, i have done some new steps to see if i could get my pc to work.
-By pressing F8 in order to get into the menu so i could start up in safe mode
-By pressing ESC ( i believe this brings me to BIOS )
-When comp is shut off placed in a Win98 SE cd-rom
    -Placed CD for VideoCard
Neither of these seem to respond, although a couple of times when pressing F8 after i got a pitch black screen..after that attempt ESC, also pitch black..

now im really getting freaked out cause i have data on my harddisk which i really don't want to loose..if this is about a damaged harddisk or erased somehow, great worries and panic on my side, i also think that it doesn't have to be my harddisk ( blegh, headache, sadness )
