Serious problem - resources hogged, items reinstalling on restarts.

APOLOGY - I THOUGHT THIS WAS BETTER PLACED IN THE EMERGENCY FORUM DURING MY PANIC EARLIER. SORRY! :shakehead:

Hello all. Hopefully this qualifies as an emergency once you read further. If not I apologize.

I'm fairly good with computers, and I have a lot of protection on my system. I have used Adaware, Spybot, Norton, SpywareBlaster, and Yahoo AntiSpy to no avail. By this I mean, I am able to remove what the programs find, but every time I restart, all the ob jects are back where they started and my CPU useage stays at 90% or more. I also have ZA Pro which SHOULD have blocked all this to begin with. So much for that $30...

Here's a small excerpt from my Adaware log file to show you what I'm dealing with.

I have ran Norton AV 2005 to see if there is some ind of trojan redownloading these things but it comes back clean. I had NOT heard of HijackThis before a friend sent it to me via email tonight and I need help interpreting the log.

Someone please help me, usually I am good at this stuff but it seems I've finally met my match.

Thanks so much in advance.
Brian

It appears at least some of the entries have returned...namely the trusted zone entries.

    Okay. Questions...

    1. Why does my IE title say "fo' shizzle mah nizzle" instead of "Microsoft Internet Explorer"? I always joke about wanting to be a gangster but I wasn't THIS serious.

    2. HijackThis is not listing an IP address that is in my trusted zone. I remove it, but it's back after reboots. The IP is: 63.219.181.7. Any idea what this is/means?

    3. Is it at all possible we could be dealing with some kind of new worm or malware/ installer variant? That would explain how things have reappeared.

    4. Good news - My start and search pages appear to be back to normal. Okay, so that wasn't a question. Whoops.

Thanks for the help. Seriously. I think I love you. (How's THAT for forum etiquette?)

    First, your questions.

    1. Usually that is a user preference and not indicative of anything bad. It's easy to change though and we'll get it on this round.

    2. That IP address belongs to Beyond The Network America Inc. Does that mean anything to you? We are going to completely clean out everything in your Trusted Zone and then you can put back any that you want there.

    3. That's always possible, but your symptoms are not unusual...so don't worry.

    4. That is good news. But puzzling because I still see websearch in your log.

    Ok, let's get to work.

    Download: DelDomains.inf
    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
    Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

This will delete everything in your trusted zone.

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

    Okay!

DelDomains is installed and my trusted sites zone is empty.

    Files:
    C:\WINDOWS\localNRD.dll - deleted
    C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll - deleted
    C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe - deleted
    C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe - deleted

    Folders:
    C:\Program Files\Hotbar - not found
    C:\Program Files\ShopperReports - not found

C:\Windows\Prefetch was cleared, recycle bin emptied, and then I restarted into normal mode.

    Here's where it gets interesting...

Housecall detected a trojan horse on my PC that it won't let me delete. So I closed out Housecall and went after it with Norton, but Norton says the file is not infected. I tried to submit it to Norton, but it wouldn't let me because Norton can detect and remove it? I'm lost. The filename is: C:\TEMP\Installer2.exe. I think we've found our reinstaller. I expect at least some if not all of the items to be back in the HijackThis log but now we know where they're coming from. Any suggestions on how to delete that file? I tried from safe mode but I didn't even see it at all. This is odd...

    HijackThis log is next...

about your antivirus not picking the virus up...i find that norton does not do that great of a job cleaning or detecting viruses. personally i use avg on my laptop and kaspersky on my desktop. avg seems to find more stuff on computers when i throw it on. norton has been nothing but trouble and i recommend switching. avg is free which is awesome. i think it's at version 7 right now. if you want to give it a shot go to www.grisoft.com and download it. if you can't delete the file, try going into safemode and running the scan to delete the file. i'm gonna let buckeye_sam finish your log because i don't know where he is at and if i start throwing stuff in it might get confusing. but i would definetely try a differnet AV program. i find norton and mcafee to be pretty crappy. avg is free and rocks.

I have to agree with pokesquid808 on the antivirus issue. AVG is very good and it's free. Norton is a known resource hog and I've heard many complaints about it. Just be sure to completely remove Norton before installing another anti-virus. Two of them running at the same time could conflict.

So let's just bypass Norton for now and kill this guy manually.

    Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

Go to C:\TEMP and delete everything inside this folder.
Go to C:\Windows\Temp and delete everything inside this folder.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\winb2s32.dll

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

This is related to Panda antivirus. I see you did an online scan, but if you don't have this installed on your system you can safely remove it with hijackthis.
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: PAVWAIT.DLL

These are optional fixes, but will help your system run better and free up some resources.

You can fix all 016 entries. These are activeX objects that are installed on your computer when you visit certain sites. The only one that is bad is the one noted above, but you can safely remove all of these to clean up a bit. If you visit a site again that needs an activeX object it will simply download it again.

    Reboot into normal mode.

Download and install Spyware Blaster. It will prevent spyware from getting re-installed on your computer.

Visit Windows Update and download all critical updates, including SP2.

Done, done, done, done, etc. lol.

I had a buddy come over and we downloaded Mozilla for me. We used that to download an array of anti-crapware programs, like SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, IEadds, the newest version of Adaware.

Fixed all entries in HijackThis, and took out all 016 entries. We'll just redo what I need later, to be completely safe.

I submitted that file to Symantec through the user notification feature before I deleted it, and am awaiting a reply.

Before I post the log...I've heard quite a few horror stories about Service Pack 2. Is it completely neccessary?

One other thing. Is there any way to uninstall Windows Messenger without crippling MSN Messenger?

    Congratulations, your log is clean.

    Disable Windows Messenger.
    1. Click Start -> Control Panel
    2. Click Performance and Maintenance
    3. Click Administrative Tools
    4. Double click Services
    5. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
    6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
    7. Click the STOP button.
    8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
    9. Click OK

SP2 has been out for a while now, it's no longer new. A lot of the initial problems seem to have been resolved. The benefit to SP2 is that it adds a lot of security features and settings to prevent spyware and viruses from infecting your computer. I recommend installing it. You can always roll back to SP1 if it causes you problems.

Alrighty. I installed SP2 and two other critical updates I needed. No problems with that.

However, about the Windows Messenger issue. The procedure you told me didn't fix the issue I have. I cannot open my Adobe Reader because every time I try to view a .pdf file, Windows Installer opens and starts installing Windows Messenger, which is odd ecause it's already installed. The only thing I've done with Windows Messenger lately is upgrade to 5.0 because it kept bugging me to do so, and I had finally had enough of the annoyance.

Thanks a bunch. Hey, I'm up in Cleveland. I owe you lunch for all this work.

Try this for your pdf problem.

Right click on a pdf file.
    Select "Open with"
    Select "Choose program"
    Find Adobe Reader.
Check the box that says "Always use this program to open this type of file".

I don't know if it will be that easy, but it's a place to start.

If I ever get up that way I just may take you up on that lunch.
    :)
