bestfriends.pif: annoying AIM virus, won't go away. PLEASE HELP!!

I have read a little bit about similar viruses, although I haven't yet tried to get rid of this, because the remove information was somewhat vague, and I wasn't 100% sure it applied.

So basically, for those who haven't heard yet, this virus sucks. It's not as bad as some, but it still sucks.

So, It runs through AOL Instant Messenger, and what it does is whenever I am online, it periodically up an away message FOR ME that says "WTF, LOOK http:link here, ended in bestfriends.pif ?!?!!!!??" If I have my own away message up already, it removes this in favor of its own virus-linked away message.

I don't know how it got here in the first place, but it got here. My virus scan said it discovered a new Trojan right after this showed up, but even after it quarantining/deleted it/whatever McAfee did, the AIM problem continues.

I downloaded HJT and was hoping (read: PRAYING) that someone could help me with this problem. Thanks so much, attached is my HTJ Log.

I have been looking into this extensively, even prior to your responding, and I'd tried the Jay Loden tool. I manually deleted a few entries i knew to be spyware, including kasperaskyav.exe, which I am almost positive is one of the responsible programs, disguising itself as antivirus software (somewhat ironic that antivirus software would be the cause of a virus....). Also, I believe the process msgfix.exe is to blame, and even after doing manual deletion of both those entries (in HJT, and then LATER when they came back I restarted in safe mode and deleted the actual programs in the WINNT/system32 folder), the AIM bug came back, and the files reappeared. So even though it looks better now (to me, at least), I am wary of what may happen after we think we've resolved the problem.

So for now, how does the HJT look? I appreciate all of your feedback in advance.

    Thanks again,
    John

alright, I will reboot right now, and then post my new log. i also noticed that in my task manager, there are like 10 instances of msgfix.exe running....whats up with this?? i know it's a virus-- agobot.il-- but none of my virus software/trend micro's online housecall finds it? what should I do about this?

The new log will be here in just a minute.

Boot into safe mode (press F8 at the BIOS scren when booting) then delete msgfix.exe.

    spyware shooter:

I already deleted msgfix.exe in safe mode once before, and it came back...hmmm. i will try again though. ok, so here is my new log (doesn't look like it has msgfix.exe in it, or kasperaskyAV.exe as well....is it possible these processes have a delay before they start, or what? I will keep a tab on it)...how does it look?
    Thanks again for your help.

Your log looks okay now. Are you still having any problems?
  • edited December 2004
    spyware shooter:

it's back. i left my computer on yesterday to see if anything would happen with this virus, or if it was gone. whatever this thing is, it started aim on its own, and then displayed the message "you must be signed in to access the hyperlink you have clicked" in two seperate windows. these were the same pop-up windows that had accumulated before when i left the aim program open but wasn't signed in (this time there were just two of them, before there were 7 or 8).

then i left my computer on overnight to see what would happen, and ran a HJT log this morning to see if anything was different. remember that msgfix.exe process i was talking about?? well there were 36 instances it that had started overnight!! THIRTY-SIX!!! what the hell is going on?? haha. no, but seriously i am just perplexed, i feel like i've tried everything. i will try once again to remove it, but this virus appears to be something that continuously generates itself, and gets worse over time....

Attached is my latest HJT log, and if you could take a look at it and let me know what to do, that would be amazing. Do you have any info on msgfix.exe and how to maybe get rid of it once and for all?

    Thanks,
    John

I believe that 2000 does not have the System Restore feature.

    spyware shooter:

what do you recommend i do from here on out? i tried once again to delete the msgfix.exe file in safe mode, and so far the file hasn't returned, but I am going to wait and give it time. I also reinstalled AIM and haven't yet had any issues. But is there anything I can do right now?? And do you think msgfix.exe and the bestfriends.pif files are related?

Did you follow the instructions in the link I gave you? If those instructions don't work, it may be part of the SDBot worm (both Gaobot and SDBot create msgfix.exe). msgfix.exe isnt' related to bestfriends.
  • edited December 2004
ok, well good to know that msgfix.exe and best friends aren't related. But somehow both keep coming back. Even after reinstalling AIM and deleting msgfix.exe in safe mode (AGAIN!), the bestfriends.pif file came back....AND the msgfix.exe process is back (and running like 30 instances again).

I haven't tried that link yet cuz I haven't really had time and I thought i was clean, but I will do it this afternoon and report my results. thanks for your help, and any other suggestions would be great.
