Script errors

Unknown

I get continual script errors while online, and keep disabling scripts to make them go away. I am running spysweeper, popup stopper, and as-aware, and everytime I go online, I pick up a ton of spy-ware type items.

Download, run, and configure Adaware

Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

* Automatically save log-file
* Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
* Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

* Scan Within Archives
* Scan Active Processes
* Scan Registry
* Deep Scan Registry
* Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
* Scan my Hosts file
* Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
* All of your hard drives

Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

* Include additional process information
* Include additional file information
* Include environment information

Click the Tweak button and select:

* Under the Scanning Engine:
o Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
o Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
* Under the Cleaning Engine:
o Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click on Proceed to save the settings.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

* Use Custom Scanning Options

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Reboot your computer.

Thanks for the help. Here is the new log.

I didn't find t?skmgr.exe, but there were two copies of taskmgr.exe. I'm not sure how that was possible, but one was fairly small and had the same date as most of the other files in the system32 directory with a typical MS windows icon. The other was dated 11/16/04 and was almost 400k in size, about the same date that my problems started and had a pretty fancy icon associated with it so I assumed it to be the culprit. Both of the files you wanted deleted were in use and couldn't be deleted so I renamed them and rebooted, then I could delete them.

Fix that entry.

Right click the larger taskmgr.exe file and go to "version". Tell me everything it says inside there. if there is no "version" tab, get rid of it.

Too late. I deleted it yesterday. It doesn't seem to affect anything as the system is running fine at this point. I could probably try to recover it with norton if necessary.

Quick follow-up. I recovered the file with norton. Right-clicking and checking the version gives me only a checksum and not available under version info.

It has been renamed to keep it from executing and I've saved it to floppy if anybody needs to take a look at it.

Are you still having any problems with this?

It doesn't look like it, at least to the same extent that I was before. I'm still getting random popups, but popup stopper seems to be intercepting them. I've been in and out fore the last few days so I haven't spent a whole lot of time on the computer and can't say for sure. At least the script errors have gone away.
