There went my monitor I think...

A week before my final portfolio project is due my monitor craps out on me, I am having very mixed feelings on this and would like anyone comments or suggestions on what I am about to mention.

Here is what happened.

I came home from class, I played a bit of DDR, left to watch TV a bit before doing "the work", which I have papers due tomorrow and the final next Friday. So I come back to my PC not 15 minutes later to begin typing up what I needed to, but the monitor won't come back on(being that I have it turn off instead of use a screen saver every 10 minutes).

I tried everything I could using what I had... but nothing is garranteed. First I brought out an OLD Gateway monitor, but I haven't used it in so long I am not sure if it works. But it too didn't bring up any image, the light stayed orange.

I brought out the old Radeon 9700 Pro, I wasn't sure if it worked either, both monitors did the same thing they did before though.

So now my roomate is home, he let me us his monitor and sure enough it works, and right now I am actually using the old 9700 pro which means it works(but I can't play games on it).

Here is where that mixed feeling comes in...

I SHOULD have a 5 year warrantee on this monitor, I got it for Graduation from my parents, it costed around $600 including the extended warrantee from Circuit City. Now last time we had a computer bought from them, it broke down a year later and they just refunded the WHOLE THING instead of doing repairs, minus whatever amount of warrantee used to that point. I am hopeing this happens again, and I can get a new monitor for around $500...

But I am curious if that will happen, what do you guys think? This was an extended Warrantee, I am not sure if the computer we had used one of these, or if when the old warrantee gives up, and the extended kicks in... if we have to go straight to the manifacturer???

Ideas, comments, suggestions? Sorry for the long post, so much has kept me from getting much sleep, 3 hours in 3 days... I'm going to loose it.

Ohh, for $500 what monitor would be nice to get these days? I'd like something that doesn't weight 67lbs to haul around :D

Would you carry 75 lbs if it was only $220 shipped, 21", flat, and supported 1600x1200@85Hz?

I think the money I get is "credit" only, so I doubt I'll be buying or trading online, plus I don't want to ever buy anything used anymore.

    Ah, credit. Righto.

Suit yourself on the used thing.

Depends on the part really... visual stuff I ant new and only new, especially monitors. They just wear down alot if you ask me.

Is there an LCD monitor 19" or more that is AROUND the price range of $500 I wouldn't want it to be more than $600 though.

Honestly? Look at froogle, newegg, or pricewatch.

Keep this in mind: The best response time is 16ms or less. Anything more and you could potentially have ghosting (With fast-moving scenes). That said, just get the monitor that's the best in your price range. Find a monitor with a good mixture of resolution and response. Find reviews of the one you picked and see how it stands up.

I'm gonna hope they have that similarly priced at Circuit City, what do you think?

I'm on the phone still but it looks like they are just going to ship me a brand new monitor... which means I'll get to keep this current paper weight..

And now I am off the phone.... not as great as I thought. It looks like they are going to ship to me "whatever they have in stock" which has "compairable" specs and could either be new or refurbished. :(

I don't like this one bit, I'd rather get the exact same model new than to risk getting a USED REFURB which is "compairable" to what I had. Used would mean it could have that wierd problem with the image being warped like around the edges with that black stuff around the edges, and the picture is crooked, and even adjusting it to the best you can won't get rid of it. I HATE THAT.

But then, it COULD be a new 21" monitor... but I doubt it. It just sucks that my mom paid over $600 including the amount of the warrantee only to have a problem a year before the warrantee is up and I must risk getting a monitor that could be worse than what I had.

Yeah, it mentioned "compairable", but this is Circuit City, to them if it's a 19" screen, it's a 19" screen, I doubt they will take into account dot pitch, and other important aspects.

As a consumer who is providing them with service I'm sure you would be able to bring it up though. I would continue to be a stick in their ass if they try to do something like that. Compairable specs must be just that, compairable.

The monitor is way better than my old one, maybe even 1 or 2mm bigger, 20lbs less in weight, better I think in everyway.

It's a viewsonic though, I've bought a few for people before when I built PC's way back, but they usually developed problems after about a year of use.

Heh, just opened the other box, it has a USB hub in it, I guess to replace the built in HUB my old monitor had. I suppose they were far more thorough in "similar specs" than I ever even imagined. Very surprised.

I actually have a Viewsonic A90f+. I've never had any problems with it, and I think the picture is great. You should hopefully enjoy the monitor.

I just looked up the price on this Viewsonic E90f and it's only $233 or so, give or take. I wish I had gotten a monitor of equal value... but, I really don't feel like complaining about it for the moment. At least they don't seem to want me to send in the last monitor. I would be angry if they expect me to ship it to them. Broken or not.

I would recommend the Viewsonic E90f ...however all I've bought the past year is dvi lcd's. You can definitely get a great 19" for under $500 and the prices are on the way down as we speak ...they are in abundance and haven't been selling well this past year mostly because of price.
Granted the picture quality isn't that of a crt but the pic quality is nothing to snear at honestly. Weight wise they weigh nothing when compared to a crt and they fit nicely on teh desktop or a nearby wall!!!
I'd recommend the samsung 910t for $469 or equivalent right off the top of my head ...brian can attest to that monitor as well.

edit:\ brian is not spelled brain.

Well a bit off topic, I almost yelled at the UPS guy, and he would have deserved it too.

When he came, he gave me the first box, a small box with the USB Hub in it. Then as I was signing the electric book thing he got out the monitor and just ploped it on my porch, a good 3 inches or so of droppage. I mean, it IS fragile... you don't just toss a monitor around like it was some kind of non fragile thing... Plus he did it right in front of me without care.

Makes me wonder what this thing had to go through when I wasn't looking :shakehead
