Started folding again - instability?

So, I finally start folding again due to us having slipped out of the top 10. I installed folding on my machine, an Athlon XP 2400+ 512Mb RAM.

First of all, when I try to play Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, the screen will go blank as if its changing resolution, then that's it, nothing more happens. Closing folding allows the game to play. I did used to have this problem when I folded before when I played bf1942. I always had to close folding.

Secondly, and more importantly, my mum loves playing Zuma, and if folding is running zuma minimises when it is loaded, and refuses to show. Maximising it just results in it minimising itself again.

My plan for folding is that I switch on the computer when I get home from work and mum can play on Zuma if she wants until I come home later, but I can't fold if it interferes with Zuma!!

No other problems whatsoever with the computer, everything stable, running at stock speeds. Suggestions??

btw I have a gromac 2500 in size and its taking days - will I get many points for this??

Are you using the graphical client or the Console?

I am running the console on my wifes machine and it lets her play any game she wants no problem... including Zuma. When I had the graphical one on there... nothing but problems.

so I switched and now she can play what ever and its just folding in the background like mad dog.....

Hmm, running graphical. I'll get rid and use the console version. Can I keep the data for the wu I'm working on??

Also, what about this massive gromac? Are they all this big these days or what?

Massive Gromacs ate my lunch for a while there (14xx's). 3 of my machines coughed up several of them at 20-30%, restarting at the beginning. I haven't been getting them lately.

    What are your temps?

I'll check tomorrow. I tried it again but I got the same IO error. I've uninstalled the Windows client properly & just started afresh using the console version.

\\Edit - Some details as follows:
CPU Temp - 57 C (with folding running)
    Mobo Temp - 30 C
    +12V - 13.312
    5V - 4.945
    3.3V - 3.328

Temps might be too high. Esp if you keep getting the error.

Hmmm, I tried putting it on this morning and I got the same error and the CPU was only 33 C and mobo 20 C. So I can't really see it being the temps?

One thing I did do was put a shortcut to folding in the Startup folder, but I think it is on my computer as a service. Will this affect things?? Getting frustrated now.

I'll try memtest, but it's crap that I have absolutely NO problems with any other programs, system stability etc. I understand this is stressing the system, but

I removed the link from the startup folder and re-ren it before I left for work. We'll see when I get home.

If you have it running as a service and start it up in the start menu then yeah you are going to have problems because you are trying to run the same WU twice and the data gets all messed up. Check your services to see if you did indeed install it as a service.

Indeed that was the issue Marc. I removed it from the startup folder & it's now running fine as a service. Thanks for the help guys.
