edited December 2004 in Hardware
Hi,
My friend was going to give me his laptop, so that i can transfer some of my music and movie files that i have on my computer to his computer because i have DSL and i am capable of getting the stuff compared to his dialup. What would be a way to transfer data from mine to his?? i know i can use a flash drive, but i want to know a different way?? can i use a usb wire to connect both pcs?

please help

thank you

Yes you can use USB but it requires special canble and some software - and it's not fast

Best way is via standard ethernet connection
If the laptop has a network adaptor built in it's cheap to put one in your PC

MOre info on the type of network and the amount of data you want to transfer - USB can be slow compared to other ways.

What sort of laptop is it?

Have a model number - if it has a network port that would be the best way to get the data off

O.k that has an intergrated 10/100 ethernet port

So simplest way to interconnect the two would be via standard ethernet
you will need an ethernet port in your PC, if it does not have one a ethernet card is one of the cheapest things you can buy - then for a direct connection between the two machines you need a cross over cable

If you already have a switch or hub then you just need two straight through cables to connect via the switch/hub

so i just connect one end of the ethernet cord to my computer and the other end to my friends computer?

yup, since u have DSL already do u have a router/switch with it? if so just use a normal (patch) cable and connect it from the router to his laptop. u will be able to transfer the files over and his laptop will also have internet availible if u wanna do updates or something
