mixing PATA and SATA drive bad idea?

edited December 2004 in Hardware
I just received a new computer and wish to add a second HD. The system came with a 7200R SATA drive. The only spare drive I have available is a PATA IDE drive. Are there any adverse effects from running a SATA and PATA drive on the same system? The PATA drive would be mainly for data storage and system backups.

Thanks
Dave

I have a Maxtor 40GB ATA133 Drive and a WD 120GB SATA150 Drive in my system, no problems, never heard of any from others either.

No, you shouldn't have any problems. I run a PATA disk on my onboard controller along side my RAID 0 SATA array with no issues whatsoever. That's on an NF7-S v2.0.

However saying that, there have been instances where problems have arisen. Gigabyte boards frequently have trouble with PATA and SATA combinations, but to be fair, Gigabyte boards frequently have trouble with just SATA! ;D Gigabyte bashing to one side though, the Abit AN7 (nForce 2 board, essentially an Abit NF7-S v2.0 motherboard with a few more features) originally had some quite bad stability problems with PATA and SATA combinations, but they were resolved with a BIOS update months ago.

So don't worry, eventhough problems do exist, PATA and SATA on most setups should work well together.

    Cheers
