Do I need a firewall?

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
I'm currently on a wireless network with this CPU. Do I need a firewall on this CPU because the router should have one on it (it's a Linksys 802.11g Broadband Wireless router)?

I'm asking cuz I'm about to DL WinXP SP2 on this CPU and am worried about multiple firewalls screwing things up on my CPU.

Your router should be a sufficient firewall. Although if you only have one computer on your network, having Windows XP SP2's firewall can't hurt either.

Read this to see why you need a firewall.

    Hi there!
I'm on wireless as well and have the same router as you, but I never knew a router would have a firewall. I do have multiple firewalls and they havn't harm or srewed up my computer or CPU. I think it'll be ok to DL WinXP SP2, it'll let you update and control what you want. :)

Awesome. Thanks again...we have three computers on the network. I'd rather not DL anything more to eat up my system resources at launch, which is why I'm asking.

Oh, one more question related to firewalls.

I'm on a cable broadband connection called Insightbb. It came with a program called the service activator that essentially is supposed to verify that this CPU is supposed to have an insightbb connection, blah blah blah. Well, I have it hooked up to my router right now, and the router (an 802.11g wireless Linksys router) is hardwired to our main computer and there are 2 other computers connected via wireless cards.

I want to move the router to another computer and have this new CPU hardwired for a less laggy connection (it's noticeable when I'm playing Counterstrike...lots of lag spikes and loss). Would I have to install this insightbb service activator program (on the CPU I want to hardwire)? The reason why I'm asking here (and not insight) is because they don't know the answer (my experience with them has been forcing me to seek answers elsewhere). I'd rather not have to install this insightbb service activator program because it slows down the current computer.
