I'm having tons of fun with this lovely Home Search Assistant. I have run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, and followed the directions trying to eliminate the HSA. I was unable to get rid of it after two attempts. I am getting very frustrated!!! I've tried my darndest to avoid buggin you guys, but I really don't have a lot of knowledge this deep into the dark crevices of a computer. It has been at lease 6 straight hours and my computer is very close to having a meeting with 'ol .357 Mag!!! I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me go through my log. Thanks!!

You really have a lot of bad things in your log so et's clean up some of this other stuff and then we'll tackle the HSA.

Make sure you have the latest update from Adaware.

Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe and run it.

Check the I know what I'm doing box.

In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of the following files.

    aklsp.dll
    calsp.dll

Select every instance of these two files, but no others, and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.

When you are done click Finish>>.

    Download CCleaner and install it.
    http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.php

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:

You still have three separate infections. Let's take them one at a time.

First you have a Peper trojan virus.

    Download Newuninst.exe
    http://downloads.subratam.org/Newuninst.exe

Double click on 'Newuninst.exe' and press *Uninstall*. Let it run and when the progress bar says *complete* you can then press *close*. You must be online to have this work and do not block any attempts for the program to connect to internet if your firewall requests access. It will just run and then close.

Reboot and post a hijackthis log.

Your log is looking much better. Let's work on getting rid of this HSA now. First we need to see if it's running a service on your computer.

Download ServiceFilter, a little script by rand1038 that reveals potential unauthorised running services in your system.
    http://home.comcast.net/~rand1038/vbscript/ServiceFilter.zip

Download, unzip and double-click ServiceFilter.vbs (you may need to disable your antivirus program to run the file). This script will create a text file named Post_This.txt in the same folder as the script itself has been saved - copy and paste the contents of Post_This.txt in your next reply here.

Post a new hijackthis log, but do not reboot or use Internet Explorer or the filenames will change and the fix could fail.

Great, here is the results from that program:
    Thanks!

The script did not recognize the services listed below.
This does not mean that they are a problem.

To copy the entire contents of this document for posting:
At the top of this window click "Edit" then "Select All"
Next click "Edit" again then "Copy"
Now right click in the forum post box then click "Paste"

    1. Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

    2. Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

    3. Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    4. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

    5. Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

    6. Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll/sp.html#29126
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll/sp.html#29126

and delete the following files if present.

    C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipnj32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\winxd.exe
    c:\windows\iemr.exe
    c:\program files\common files\wintools\wtoolss.exe

    7. Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

    8. Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

    9. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    10. Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

    11. Finally, do an online scan at the following site. Let it remove any infected files found.
    Trend Micro (PC-cillin) - Free on-line Scan
    http://housecall.antivirus.com

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

Okay, I followed your directions... the only thing that I could not do was the cleanmgr part. It just freezes when I try to run it (same thing it did when I tried it a few days ago). I went into IE and under options cleared temp internet files (hopefully that won't mess anything up that I went into IE during this... I was in safe mode so I wasn't connected to the internet if that makes any difference). I also cleared my recycle bin. Here are my two logs:

Download Firefox to use as an alternate browser until we are sure this fix worked.
    http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll/sp.html#29126
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll/sp.html#29126
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll/sp.html#29126
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
    C:\WINDOWS\plwvf.dll

Once you have Firefox do not use Internet Explorer until we determine that HSA is gone.

Okay, I downloaded Firefox, ran HJT, deleted those entries, but did not find the plwvf.dll file to delete. Also, I did not do any rebooting (hopefully I wasn't supposed to)(am in regular (not safe) mode), and have not opened IE again. Here is my newest log:

    Thanks,

The HSA is gone from your log. But you still have another infection. It is a very new VX2/Look2Me parasite and shows in your log in these lines.

    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
    O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

There is no automated fix for this variant yet so it has to be removed manually. The first thing we need to do is collect some information from your computer.

Can you please start off by downloading VX2Finder to your desktop from here:

    http://downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder(126).exe

Start vx2finder, then click on "Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet" and then click "Make Log" and copy and paste the entire contents of the log here.

Please download DLL Compare to your desktop from here:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/DllCompare.exe

Start Dll Compare, then click on "Run Locate.com". When it tells you that's finished, click on "Compare" at the bottom right. When that finishes, click "Make a Log of What was Found" and answer "Yes" to View Log file. Copy and paste the contents of that log here.

Please also open the c:\Windows\System32 folder and see if there's a file there called Guard.tmp visible and report that here as well.

Can you please download the file "Find It.zip" to your desktop from here - http://computercops.biz/zx/Zupe/Find%20It%20NT-2K-XP.zip . Unzip the contents to a folder, then open the folder and double-click on Find.bat. It will run for a minute, then produce a log. Please copy and paste that log here.

In addition to those logs, please post a new hijackthis log also. Then do not reboot your computer or use IE until we complete the fix. Doing so may change some of the filenames and cause the fix to fail.

I really would like to see that DLL Compare log before we proceed any further. See if you can restore autoexec.nt(see link below) and try to run just that tool again.

    Download Killbox:
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

    Disconnect from the internet.

Next, start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.

When that finishes, copy and paste each of the following lines into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those in a minute:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\aursvc.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\azamlaj11do.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\azau0gf9e62.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\c4002edmgh0a2.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cdmrepl.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dnn0015me.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dzdpmesh.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\f4l02e3mgh.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\g8jo0i13e8.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gp08l3du1.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\h40qled51h0.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hrpm0571e.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\i0lo0a33ed.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\i660lgjm16oa.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\j06mlaj11do.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\k208lcdu1f08.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kt62l7jo1.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ktlql7351.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\l8r0li9m18.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mv84l9lq1.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\oaxni.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pnzmi.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\q086lals1dq6.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\reqgl.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\shcbase.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\uhijm.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\unijm.dll

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\upijm.dll

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, run killbox again, but this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer "No" until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer "Yes".

When it reboots, please post a new Find.bat log and a new Hijack This log.

Your VX2 log is clean! I'd say you killed it! Good job.

Now let's just clean up that one last 015 line and you should be clean.

Download(right click on the link and "Save as"): DelDomains.inf
    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
    Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

Then rescan with HijackThis and see if that entry returns.

Note: this will remove all entries in the Trusted Zone and Restricted Zone.

Now install Spyware Blaster for some protection so we don't have to do this again.

    :D
