AMD Semprons To Migrate To 754 Pins Only

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
Rumor has it that AMD plans to move Semprons to Socket 754 only by the end of 2005.
One good piece of news for all of you who love your Socket 754 motherboards. Many early Athlon adopters felt betrayed when AMD changed its sockets way too soon for most people's taste.
Socket 754 boards are really getting very cheap and make a perfect board for Semprons. AMD plans to move Samprons to socket 754 only by the end of 2005. This will really mean the end of Athlon XP marchitecture as current socket 462, Socket A Semprons are nothing much than renamed Athlon XPs.

In 2005 AMD plans to introduce Semprons from 2600+ and all the speed steps to the currently available 3100+. Needless to say, these CPUs will be very affordable and they will be based on the Athlon 64 core. To remind you, even though this will be an Athlon 64 core AMD disabled its 64 bit support. It's still a 32 bit CPU only and its cache is cut to 256K.

That was the plan de jure all along; it said so in my athlon article and that was taken from AMD roadmaps.

Intel Plans to push 64bits into every P4/Celeron CPU in 2005 so expect the S754 Semprons to become 64bit enabled in 2005 also.
