Installing SP1... atapi.sys in use

I've recently reformatted and installed xp pro again. I'm trying to install SP1 but it says atapi.sys is "open or in use by another program." I already tried restarting the computer. (READ: That resulted in me needing to reinstall windows. It doesn't like when I exit in the middle of the installation. )

We have recently made a domain in our home for these computers... Umm... I'm not the one managing it and I don't know how it all works, except that my user account is on the server's HD instead of my own. (I think.) I don't know if this has ANYTHING to do with my problem, but this has never happened before now.

If I go and exit this install now I will have to install windows for the third time TODAY. Please please please help!

-Rick

PS. If nothing works (my friend is coming a little later to see if he can help) I can try and make a new XP cd with SP1 or 2 already on it (slipstreamed is the term I believe?) I will need some help making a new cd.

Run msconfig and disable anything not totally essential, especially anything relating to any CD/DVD burning software, Daemon tools, or any other software that monitors or emulates a drive. You might also try disabling any CD/DVD drives temporarily.

If that is the case it might indeed be the problem. Can you log onto your machine locally as "Administrator" and install SP1?

Thanks, prof. CD emulation software was causing my problem. You saved my life, man! No service pack = no USB drivers. No USB drivers = hell! :D

    Problem resolved...

I've got the same problem and when I disable even all the things in msconfig the error message keeps on popping up.
Is there any other solution? Help is appreciated.

Try stopping any services which are not critical. I'll attach a guide which should be helpful in figuring out which ones are safe to temporarily (or even permanently) kill:
