User Screen Problem

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
I had downloaded a program that you could change the backround on the screen where you picked the user name to log onto. I then deleted the program because it was slowing my computer down. But after i deleted it, the old backround i downloaded was still on there, how can i get rid of it?

-I'll get back to you on the name of the website.

Right-Click on any area of the desktop, then left-click on properties. Click the "Desktop" tab and then click "Browse" to use the picture of your choice. If you want to use one of the default Windows backgrounds scroll through the list under "Background". If you want just a plain color, choose "none" and set the color in the box provided. :)

    thanks...

But do you know how to change the backround back to default in the screen where you choose the user name to log in?

The file for the logon screen is named logonui.exe. It is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32. Most likely the program you used for the custom screen replaced this file with their own version. If you are lucky, they made a backup of the original file. It might be named something like "logonui.bak" or "logonui.ex_". Do a search for this exact term:

    logonui.*

and see what you find. You should find "logonui.exe" and hopefully some other very similar files. One of them is likely to be the backed-up version, assuming you have one.

You will need to boot up in Safe Mode to replace the file. Rename the existing logonui.exe to logonui.old (unless by chance that is the name of the hopefully-backed-up file you found in your search. If that's the case rename it logonui.bak) and rename the backed-up file back to its original name of logonui.exe.

Be careful! If you get the wrong file your computer may not boot at all. Make sure and set a restore point first. If you have any doubt about what you're doing, don't do it! It may seem like a small detail, but if your logon screen is messed up you likely won't be able to get any farther.

A safer way might be to reinstall the program you used to change it to begin with and see if there is an option to restore the original from there.
