I am thinking of doing my own website and have thought about using Sarcnet becuase of all of the good reviews and recommendations for it. However, I would like to know what they charge and what hosting options they have. Their website seems to have no information.

Yes, their website totally sucks. I agree 100%.

Basically the primary offering is 320gb transfer, 500mb webspace, 5 email addresses, and our superb customer support for $10 a month (that's the basic package)

The uber package is unlimited transfer, 1gb webspace, php/mysql, 10 email address, and our superb customer support for $20 a month.

We also offer colocation and managed server packages starting at $235 a month, but I'm not sure if that's what you are looking for.

thanks for the info. It will be a personal site and am looking at doing a webshow of sorts. I'm currently majored in Mass Media at the college I go to and thought that doing a website and using media in it would be a good idea.

The other hosting company I am looking at offers 2000MB space and 200GB bandwidth, but I definetly like your company's option of unlimited bandwidth even though the space is half of what the other company offers.

It's almost inconceievabe that a website needs 2gb of space ;)

I have several websites hosted with Sarcnet. Yes, I admit Im biased but I have never had a single problem and I have used other hosts in the past (1and1 & fasthosts). Sarcnet provides me what I need without restriction.

We're also very flexible. I mean, okay, if you need more than a gig of space, we'll give it to you. Hell, send us a 40gb drive that would cost you about $50 or something, and you'll have 40gb of space.... We work like that.

That 2GB hosting site is the same one that one of my former employers uses for his company's website and his own personal website and he seem pretty satisfied with it. However, all he has is a graphical price listing of the products he sells at his store and on his personal site he has some of his music and a biography of sorts.

Thanks. Anyhow, who do I contact to get things started? Most hosting websites I have seen so far offer some sort on online sign-up. Who does your domain registration? Not looking for much to start with, but I do want to be able to expand if the need arises without too many restrictions, i.e running in to bandwidth restrictions, etc.

OT- some of the problems I am having so far are coming up with a catchy and pertinent URL and tweaking the site to be at least somewhat useable and appealing. So far all I have is an HTML book and all I know so far are the basics like tables, frames, hrefs, etc. I am taking a webdesign class as an elective next semester to hopefully learn more.

Just PM me. You can use whatever registrar you want, although we recommend Dotster. I really wouldn't worry about expansion. We are very good in working with our customers as they grow (ask Camman on this site, or Panzerkw - they both started with minimal requirements and now have large, thriving sites)

I like Camman's site and it has given me a few ideas, but I'm sort of limited on personnel as most of my close friends have different work hours and have families to deal with, i.e. wife and kids. The other site I like, and I believe it is hosted on Sarcnet is www.loudmouthtim.com. His site is a little boring at least as far as design goes, but he has been one of the few people that actually puts out a webshow and keeps up with it. Most others are now defunct or put a few shows out and then nothing.

BTW- how I wonder how long Camman was up after drinking that energy beverage concoction?

Prime.... when you say we can send you a 40 GB drive and get 40 GB storage space (plus 320 GB transfer bandwidth/month)... does it have to be IDE or will SCSI work as well? :)

Oh... and can it be larger (IE >120 GB).

hey, you're not even one of my customers! ;D

You have to understand that this is sort of a limited kind of thing, I mean we only have a few servers and they are all 1U, so physical space is limited. If you're gonna be using it as strictly an FTP/image hosting/file sharing site for your buddies or whatever, I probably can't accomodate. I mean that if an established customer who has been with us for a while finds that the 1gb thing is limiting them, we'll work with them to accomodate more space. You understand, I'm sure.

Yeah, prime rules, Sarcnet=teh 0wnage, don't get anybody else. Like, seriously, $10 is the cheapest you're gonna get DECENT web hosting anywher else and being able to deal with the server admins on a one-on-one basis is a priceless service that is VERY rare to find, and I've had quite a few web hosts in my time.

    (but Godaddy.com > Dotster)

wow i had no idea it was so cheap. My site has 3 mysql databases and needs php along with a few extensions to run. Is that all included? Just so happens my current hosting contract runs out at the end of the month.
