CD-RW not going at its speed!

edited December 2004 in Hardware
I have a 48x CD-rw and its only going at like 7.5x which is really stupid and I dont konw why it is. I used Nero, alcohal 120%, and record now. and I did a ISO burn and a regular music CD burn and it does the same. And It is LAGGING my Computer really bad. It said on nero it was using 110000 memory.

why!

This is a CD-RW that was taken from the same HP PC of mine.

    Make sure you:

    1) Have updated all your burning software to the latest version. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to buy the latest release (though that might help), just that the version you own is up to date.

    2) Make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner. Check in Device Manager to see what you have now, then with the manufacturer to see if there is a newer version available. This site is handy for finding an update in a hurry. Make sure it's the right file for your burner!

    3) Make sure you have the latest IDE Controller drivers for your Motherboard.

    4) Check your media (blank discs). I spent an afternoon cussing at a new burner a few years ago until I realized that the blank CD's I used with the old burner were rated way lower than the fast new burner I had just installed...

    Good Luck! :)

Use the NeroInfoTool (attached). See the part marked in red. Make sure you have the right drive selected. :)

That's the best way. There are utilities which will tell you all about your hardware, but they are are not always 100% accurate. A bad flash could ruin the drive so it's best to be safe. Just post the info here when you get it and I'll see what's available for your drive. :)

Some drives have a speed switch on them.

On my liteon if you push the open button for so many seconds it changes the drive speed for less vibration and noise. To change it back just press the button for so many seconds again. I think it was 3 seconds but has been awhile so I am not sure.

It is the button to open the tray.

Check your manual or online documentation to see if that unit has that feature.

It appears that there is some controversy regarding the firmware for your drive.

Have a look at the link - I'll see what else I can find.
