Just curious about spyware

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
Most of the time, I know spyware comes from P2P stuff such as Kazaa, Limewire, etc. Where else does it commonly come from? How does it infect MSIE (I'm running firefox and don't think I've ever had a spyware problem with it)?

I'm asking because I want to safeguard myself by being aware of what sites and internet programs I use and what I shouldn't use.

You pick up spyware with certain freebies such as screensavers that want you to agree to install their handy-dandy search bar and with malicious scripts executed in certain types of sites (pr0n, hacker's sites, warez sites, etc) and as you say certain P2P softwares but there are also spyware types of things in certain run of the mill types of software as well, Creative has what's considered spyware in their audio driver packages.

That's a few of them, I never had much problem with spyware myself even running IE (I'm running FireFox now) but my wife was the worlds worst about downloading crapware (software with spyware bundled with it) onto my PC whenever I wasn't looking so I learned really quick how to disinfect my PC and what to watch for (mainly my wife sitting behind the keyboard ;D ) as well as how to avoid it.
