Spybot S&D 1.3 freezes while scanning

HI i'm new to the forum, and thanks for the welcome. I have had a problem with Spybot S&D 1.3 ever since i got my own new PC. Every time I try to scan my pc for spyware, adware, and malware with spybot, it freezes, and doesn't finish scanning. It doesn't even get to a point at which it has found any spyware. I have watched it and let it run for and hour w/o doing anything on my pc, not even clicking. And it will just freeze. It never freezes at the same point more than once. I have watched it get though up to 5000 files, or what ever that number in the bottom left is. It sometimes stops around 150, and others times it will go up around 4000, but it never finishes. I have even tried scanning my PC when the only program installed on it is Spybot S&D. even before i connect it to internet. I don't know why it freezes. Here are my system specs. I'm pretty sure that none of my hardware should cause this, but i'll include it anyway.

CPU - pentium 4, hyperthreading, 2.8GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FBS pin 478
Motherboard - Chaintech 9CJS Zenith, (the list of specs is very long)
RAM - 1 GB, (512x2) DDR 400MHz
Hard Drive - Western digital 200GB SATA
Video card - Chaintech nVidia gForce FX5700 256MB RAM (not the FX5700LE)
Wireless network card- TrendNet 54Mbps TEW-423PI
Operating System - Windows XP Pro SP1a

i'm not gonna bother including my disk drives, because they should in no way affect the performance of Spybot S&D 1.3. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you all.

Thanks i'll try hijackthis. But i would like to know how to get spybot S&D1.3 to work, or at least why it freezes.

Removing some spyware with HJT may help fix Spybot.

yeah thx but i just totally reformatted my hard drive and spybot S&D 1.3 does the same thing both before and after i update it.
