fatal error message

edited December 2004 in Spyware & Virus Removal
I keep getting signs on my computer that say "INF Install failure. Reason: The data is invalid.", I can close them but they reappear three times then go away, but I get it several times a day. I get another one that says "Fatal execution error". Any advice? Here's my log, I'm sure someone knowledgeable will see that I probably have lots of other problems as well.

Yep, you've got a few things going on in that log. Let's take care of Wintools first as it will make your computer start to run better once it's gone and make cleaning up the rest much easier.

Wintools may have an entry in the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If so, it may be easy to get rid of. If not, there are still ways to remove it from your system.

    For either solution:

    Reboot into Safe Mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

    Once in Safe Mode:
Click on the Start Button, Control Panel. Double-click on Administrative Tools then on Services.
Look for a service called Wintools for IE Service. double-click it to open, then click the Stop button and change the "Startup type" to Disabled.
(If the service is not there, no worries...all the better!)

Next, right-click on the Windows Taskbar and select Task Manager.
In the Processes tab, look for WToolsA.exe, WToolsS.exe and WSup.exe. If any or all of these exist, right-click on each one and select End Process Tree, and answer affirmatively to any confirmation questions.

At this point, you can check the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel. If there is an uninstaller for Wintools, try running it now. I would still recommend proceeding through the rest of this fix even if there is an uninstaller, however.

Now, please open a command prompt (Start button -> Run, type cmd and click "OK"). at the prompt, type
    regsvr32 /u /s "C:\Program Files\Toolbar\toolbar.dll" then <ENTER>.
Then type exit to close the command prompt window.

Now, we can proceed to delete these directories, located at:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools <-- Delete the BOLD directory.
    C:\Program Files\Toolbar <-- Delete the BOLD directory.

Please download the most current version of Hijackthis and post a new hijackthis log.

Your log is looking much better. Let's just clean up a few more things and get you some protection and then if you're still getting that error we'll look into that a little deeper.

First, click on this link to see how to show hidden files on your computer.
    http://www.short-media.com/forum/showpost.php?p=172588&postcount=3

Once you have done that just verify for me once more that these files are gone.

    C:\WINDOWS\system\imgps.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\inf\nutsvr.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\ccgctp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\inf\nutsvr.exe

It's possible that the VX2 cleaner and Adaware got rid of them already. Did the VX2 add-on find anything when you ran it?

Now let's get rid of a couple more startup programs that are unnecessary to run at startup. These two just use up your computer's resources and don't really do much for you. Place a checkmark next to these entries, close all browsers and windows, and have HijackThis fix them by clicking Fix Checked:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DwlClient] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Dell\EUSW\Support.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

It doesn't look like you have an antivirus program on your computer. Please download and install AVG anti-virus. It's free and does an excellent job. Once installed, download any updates and run a scan. It may find some things that are not showing in your log.
    http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg70free_296a409.exe

Next, download and install Spyware Blaster. It will protect you from getting infected by spyware. Again make sure to download all updates for it.
    http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html

Finally look down in the bottom right side of your screen in your system tray. You should see a multicolored icon. Put your mouse over it and see if it says something like "You have critical updates waiting to install." If so, click on the icon and follow the prompts to install these Windows critical updates.

Let me know what the virus scan finds(if anything) and please post a new hijackthis log. Also let me know if you are still getting that error.

I showed the hidden files, but still didn't find those directories. When I ran VX2 I think it said that the computer was clean. AVG found 19 infected files and deleted them. It said Trojan something. I tried to install the updates on my computer, but it said XP Service Pack 2 couldn't install. I haven't gotten the error message since I installed everything, but it's only been a few hours (although it had been doing it more often)This might be a dumb question, and I'm not even sure if you can answer it but, for the past month I have not been able to go to some of my favorite sites, it says the page cannot be displayed, but I can get to the website from other people's computers, it's not an infected site, it's a clothing store (armaniexchange). Is there any reason that this could be happening? Thank you again for all of your help. Here's my new log.

Now let's take a peek at your hosts file to see why those pages aren't loading for you.

With Hijackthis click on Config -> Misc Tools ->Open hosts file manager -> Open in notepad

Now copy that log and post it here.

  • edited December 2004
Yes, I still can't get to the website, but I guess that's fine, I can't really fix it. On the bright side I guess I'll save a lot of money not being able to shop. Is there anything else in there that I should be worried about?

Your log is clean. But you really need to install some critical updates to your computer or you run the risk of getting reinfected.

Visit Windows Update and install all critical updates.

I tried installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, but every time I try to install it, it fails. I tried the link you gave me as well as the toolbar on my computer, but it won't install.
