Webpages just won't show.

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
My computer connects to a webpage, says done, shows nothing at all but a totally blank page. I've waited a very long time for something to load, but nothing does. I was thinking that it was just the dialup service being extremely slow, but that isn't the case since it goes OK on another computer in the same location.

It's IE6. OS is W2000 Pro. I've done the usual, cleaned out cookies, temp int files, defragged. I've updated & run Ad-aware & Spybot Search & Destroy, as well as AVG Anti-virus.

I'm out of ideas. I'll appreciate any help someone may be able to give me.

Lil

Hi Lil, try downloading firefox. If pages don't display with it, then we'll continue troubleshooting.

Reinstall IE6 or the service pack that brings IE6? You could also use this time to switch to Firefox. :D

I have already tried reinstalling IE6 using the setup file, and that didn't help at all. I can't update Windows or download Foxfire if I can't see anything. I mean I can't see ANYTHING!!!

You should be able to download the file directly from here.

I take it you're on a different computer. Can you burn that file to cd or something?

If the above doesn't work, you could always do a repair installation.

Lessee, with IE 6.0 sometimes you can reload pages or refresh them and get them to load. This happens here in IE 6.0 SP2 ALSO, even more than it did in IE 6.0 SP1 which is normal for other windows versions. A variety of security patches with some sites, will do this, and in many pages that do tis, clicking reload gets page loaded, and sometimes if I KNOW the site is a valid and good and well-run site that I know does not feed junk too dang often, like Microsoft.com for a good site example, I have had to give that site trusted site status to get more even loading and less refreshing out of IE (note, trusted site status forces browser to treat site as a low-security site, be VERY, VERY, careful what sites you trust this way). Thus, I now use Firefox, which on same exact URL loads more often than IE.

Well ... I've just copied the Firefox file to my flash drive and will give that a try. Thank you, TBonz. I will also see if the "trusted site" procedure will get IE to load. Thanks for your input, Straight_Man. I think that I did already adjust the security settings in the IE Options, but I'll just check that again, too. I also reset the Advanced options to default (as suggested by a tech here at my office).

I'm not sure what Black Hawk means by doing a "repair installation", so I guess I'll start with the Foxfire installation option and see how that goes.

Since it's my granddaughter's computer, I guess I'll be trying this stuff on the weekend when I can get there. LOL

I'll post my progress. Thanks all.

Repair installation is when you run the OS installation again but it only repairs files. It's doesn't delete any of your files, programs or settings but sometimes you need to install the video drivers afterwards.
