Loading sata drives problem.

I'm rebuilding my #1 pc because I had a PS go bad and burn up my original MB. It did damage the molex connector, but not the traces. So, Later on I'm going to try to replace the connector plug on the MB. (waiting for parts)
Anyway, here's my pc stats-
#1 pc for network
MB- Asus A7V8X VIA KT400 DDR400 chpst
CPU- Athlon XP 3200+
Heatsink- SwiftTech MCX462-V™/TT SilentCat 90mm
HD's- 2 Western Digital Raptors 36.7GB 10K SATA
Ram- OCZ PC3200 Ultra high perf.
AGP- Tyan Tachyon ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
DVD- Pioneer 16X DVD+/-R 4X DVD+/-RW 24X24X32X CD-R/RW
CD- Lite-On 52X32X52 Internal EIDE CD-RW Drive
PSU- Thermaltake Pure Power 480W Xaser edition
Case- Chieftec Dragon with Window (Black)
OS- Win XP Pro
Here's my problem-- I've set up the raptors before on my A7N8X Del MB and they went right in and were recognized after I loaded the sata drivers.
Now, the 2 drives have win xp pro and other stuff on them and I knew I would have to reformat them to get them to work on the new MB because the chipset is VIA and not Nvidia NForce2, even though they are almost identical. That's no prob. I can live with losing a few things on the drives.
So, I put the pc together and it runs fine --cool temps etc, no smoking or shorting out of anything. I turn it on with the win xp pro in the cd drive and have the sata drivers on a floppy-ready to go. I hit delete while booting and change boot to CD first. Restart, let it load and of course when it says hit F6 if you want to load drivers for scsi or sata drives, it doesn't respond until later when windows loads the install drivers it asks if you have other drives you want to load drivers for -hit S. I hit S and it says put in the floppy- I do, it copies them and then gos to next page and says do you want to load these drivers--Yes. It loads them and continues on to loading windows screen which you have to hit enter to install win xp. I hit enter and it says there are no drives recognized on this pc and win xp install will quit. Hit F3 to restart. I went to every site that I could find on the subject, to no avail. 11 hrs trying over and over different ways yesterday to install these drives to be recognized. Like I said it was a breeze on the A7N8X Del MB, but this Bastach won't recognize them. I even went into the raid program part and set the drives up as 1-0 stripe, which shows up, but not recognized when windows starts loading. Also did a shutdown, and CMOS clear. Thought that might do it, but no it didn't. I've built and modded quite a few pcs, so it's not like I'm a newb at this or anything. I'm just stuck on this one friends. So, If anyone out there has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it. Sorry bout the long post.

Nobody knows. Guess I'll have to trashcan the 2 raptors and go back to IDE's.
Mods, You can delete this thread. thnx

Do what I had to do on this machine because it refuses to work properly (after installing the drivers when you press S, it asks me for a disk that doesn't exist).

Install Windows on a PATA drive, keep the SATA controler turned on but leave the drives disconnected. Install the drivers for the SATA controler once Windows is fully installed. Turn the computer off, connect the SATA drives and use Ghost to copy the partition from the PATA drive to the SATA drive. Turn the PC off and remove the PATA drive.

You should now be able to boot as normal with the SATA drive. Connecting and disconnecting the drive at the times I say is critical else it WILL go very wrong.

Yes, it's a bit long winded, but it works.

Thnx Enverex, I'll try that and see what happens. Appreciate the help.
Will PowerQuest Drive Image 2002 do it? I've never copied one drive to another, so I don't want to screw it up.

Yeah it sounds like a driver problem to me. Check you're selecting the correct drivers upon XP setup. I can't tell you how many times I've selected the wrong driver file (e.g for a different chipset) and had it say "can't detect any drives".

Remember, even though it's not obvious, when the Windows XP setup lists the different drivers off the floppy disk for the various controllers, you can scroll down to get more choices. I would however just check you're using the correct SATA driver disk for your board. If in doubt though, just download the drivers from the ASUS site and make a disk up yourself.

It sounds to me that's your problem. If it is, don't worry mate, I do it all the time. Let us know how you get on.

    Cheers
