NFSU2: LAN doesn't work

edited January 2005 in Gaming
i have this weird problem with the LAN.
i can use play in my campus dorm with other people in the same building.
then i'd take my laptop and play with my friend at his place (we're sharing the connection using hub w/ high speed internet). then for some reason we can't see each other.
is there anything wrong with sharing the same network?

If your going through a hub, chances are that your not on the same network, A high speed internet connection will usually assign an IP address to only one computer. In order to see each other youll need to explicitly set IP's on each computer, and then chances are your internet connection wont work ...

to get them both working on the internet and have an local network, you'll need a router, or have one machine serve an address to the other through a second network interface ...

Just to check, look at the IP's on both machines...

    hi,
yea...i was quite lost there...so do we need to have the same IP? (don't think so right?) i thought to play LAN we need to be in the same port only.
well...here's the thing...i'm not sure how we're getting 2 IPs as we only using the sympatico one.
"x" tells the similarity between the 2 systems.
except the router thing, how to do the computer being a server?
    thanks

ethernet adapter local area connection (comp1):
    IP: xxx.xxx.x.10

    PPP adapter sympatico (comp1):
    IP:xx.xxx.52.120

ethernet adapter local area connection (comp2):
    IP: xxx.xxx.x.11

    PPP adapter sympatico (comp2):
    IP:xx.xxx.49.145

    Hi,
    Have a look at http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~greg/nfsu2relay.html
for a solution and links to this and related NFSU2 LAN game connection problems.

With this, LAN games are always possible, but some situations are harder to deal with than others.

To see each other your lan ip's just have to exist in the same subnet. Usually you'll have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (you should see a place to set this when you manually assign your computer's ip).

What that mask means is that for your computers to be in the same LAN, they need to match for the first 3 parts. Eg both computers must have 192.168.0.xxx and the 'xxx' part is the bit that is unique for each computer on the network.

With NFSU2 I had lots of trouble getting the filters for finding game servers right, so try playing around with those. It should have a 'show all games' option but the game designers didn't think of that by the look of it :buck:

Edit: Have you only tried to connect to your friends comp via the NFSU2 game? Or tried finding his computer via Windows eg pinging him as well?

    oh thx great info.
yes we both have the first 3 parts the same. so how do we manually set the subnet? and we both need to have the same subnet? ie 255.255.255.0?
oh btw, i didn't try pinging him but we can connect through cs:source though.
    thanks
