XP or 64?

edited December 2004 in Hardware
I'm looking at getting a new processor and motherboad for aroud £200 combined, at the moment I've got an AMD athlon XP 2400 however I would like some help about the new AMD 64 as I know nothing about it really.

What would be faster for running current 32 bit stuff, windows, office, games, video compression etc, an AMD XP 3200 (or around that) or an AMD 64 3200, both around £120.

For the AMD 64 3200, it says it runs at 2.2GH, however what is this in equivelent to a 32 bit computer, as 2.2GH sounds very slow.

If the AMD 64 3200 is quicker at everything than the 3200 XP, then what motherboad would you recomend, for around £80, I don't need on boad lan, sound, or modem.

Thanks for the help.

The AMD 64 is the current king. They are noticeably faster then the XPs. If the price is the same, the AMD 64 (specifically socket 939 version) is the way to go. AMD will continue to make more powerful socket 939 CPUs for the foreseable future, while you will be stuck at 3200 with the XP.

Well if you've got to keep it below £80 & you want to go Socket 939, then you can pretty much rule out rule out a Nforce3 board.

    Therefore I'd suggest this:

    Abit AV8-3rd Eye £79.94

and one of these to go in it:

    Amd Athlon64 3200 S939 £135
