Computer hangs at XP loading screen

I built this machine for a family member and it's giving them trouble. I could have sworn it worked before I left...

Anyway, they complained that the sound wasn't working, so I had them open up the Sounds and Audio devices control panel only to find that there was no audio device installed. The motherboard is an Abit NF7-S with Soundstorm audio and I had loaded the chipset driver in advance, so I had them uninstall the nForce unified driver, reboot, install the nforce driver again, and reboot. Now XP hangs at the loading screen.

I had them uninstall and reinstall the drivers again. The machine will boot up in safe mode and with no nforce drivers installed. The BIOS version was the most current one as of Thanksgiving, and the drivers are dated from September. I'm having them run chkdsk from the XP CD to check for filesystem corruption.

Any ideas?

Have them run HijackThis in Safe Mode. It could be that Windows is trying to load something which is no longer (all) there.

Problem solved: I had them install the nForce drivers from the motherboard CD. I'm going to chock this one up to poor drivers. WTG nVidia.
