Hijack this not downloading correctly

Hi...I just spent the last three days fixing my friends computer, she couldn't even connect to the internet anymore. There was alot of nasty stuff in there including CoolWebSearch. Just about everything is fixed and I wanted to downnload hijack this and the removal tool for CoolWebSearch (to make sure it really is all gone), and everytime I do it gets saved as a file that looks something like a data file, not a folder like I have on my computer. And I try to open it and it wants me to open it with a program from the list, I tried one and when it opens it just looks like some code. It's driving me nuts! The same thing with the removal tool. The file ext are both zip on them but they don't work. Also while i'm here can you tell me where I can disable start options on this computer, she has Windows 2000 pro. Any help would be nice...thanks

You can disable startup items using msconfig. Go to Start»Run and type msconfig. Go to the "Startup" tab and disable them there. Have you tried downloading HJT from a different server?

Thanks for the quick reply...when i go into start>run and type in msconfig it says "Cannot find the file 'msconfig' (or one of it's components). Make sure that the path and filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available". This computer has win 2kpro and just yesterday i downloaded the service pack 4 for 2000. Yes I did try different servers...download.com and when it wouldn't work went to merijn.org. Somewhere it told me to go there if I was having a problem because coolwebsearch has a variant that will prevent this program from downloading properly. I tried to download the coolwwwsearch.smart killer removal tool from there too and the same thing happens. It saves it as a file with the windows logo on it and when i try to run it asks me to choose from a list of programs to open it with. As far as I can see I've gotten rid of all the spyware (or so I think). Computer's working good, spybot is clean, adaware is clean...all the programs that kept coming back coolwwwsearch and prutect are gone for good...don't get it  ...any help would be appreciated!!! Thank you :)

You may need to reset the file associations.

I figured it out and feel like a dummy now...lol This computer (it's my friends, i'm cleaning it) didn't have a program to open zipped files and I just downloaded winzip. So HiJack this worked and I'm posting a new thread with the log to make sure I got out all the crap. Msconfig still doesn't work but ya can't have everything, huh??!!! Thanks so much for the reply ;)
