Graphic accelerator issues?

When I have been playing half life 2 my computer always freezes and either goes to the main screen and shows an error message or has to be reset. It says something about a graphic accelerator issue. I have an ati radeon 8500 128 mb and have tried lowering the settings. My cpu is a amd anthlon 2200+. I have downloaded and installed the newest catalyst drivers for my card but that did not seem to work. The error message is pictured below.

Occasionally HL2 gives me that also. I don't know what the deal is...

VPU Recover is a feature in the newest ATI Driver set. what it does is when it reads that your gpu is in danger of locking up it will HALT any action that the gpu is doing, wait, and then reboot itself. generally what makes this happen is overheating or maybe driver issues. but i would think that you should look at cooling first

Have you tried disabling VPU Recover through the ATI Control Panel?

the problem with disabling vpu recover is usually when it happens, its because your system was about to hard lock
