SATA drive 'not detected' issues. Please help!

Got my son a Sata drive by mistake, thought it was an IDE 133. I don't buy next-gen stuff till I have researched thoroughly and this has got me steaming.
His old HD died, I ordered this from newegg, realized it was sata, found the cables in the old box, plugged it in, checked the jumper settings on the MB, plugged the old 4 pin power cable in, popped in XP pro, and it says no harddrive detected. It doesn't say anything about where the jumper should be on the back of the hd, tho it came with the jumper on the far right in an up and down placement like this :::I . I can't format the drive if it can't find it, and I can't find any helpful info from the Asus manual.
MB is A7N8X deluxe original rev.
HD is WD800JD 8mb item N82E16822135106 on Newegg.
Have XP pro to load when ready.
Have switched sata cables and fiddled with them for connection, don't think thats the prob. Using the old style 4 pin PS cord due to lack of sata PS cable.

What is my problem here? Anyone have similar issues with new sata drives?
Thanks in advance for any and all help fellas. No old school stuff works for me here!

You need to insert a floppy disc with the txtsetup.oem drivers for your particular SATA controller (I think it's the SI 3112); then when you're going through the setup process, and it asks you to hit F6 to install a third-party raid/controller driver.. Hit F6! Point it at your floppy drive and it'll pick the drive up and go. You can pick the floppy image up from Asus's website in the drivers/bios section for that board.

Crap. Didn't work. I made floppies of txtoem's and hit f6 during XP install at proper time and it took them, but then hung for a long time with no HD action. Also ran WD datalife prog from a floppie and it did not even detect the HD. Could my HD be DOA from Newegg? Am I supposed to format the new HD before all this stuff? It wont let me format, fdisk, setup, nothing. I'm about ready to just send it back for a regular old IDE ata133 HD that I know how to use.

Excuse me for asking but did you enable the SATA controller in the bios?

Yeah, if you're running it in RAID mode (as I suggest you should), and the controller is enabled, you should be able to see the SI 3112 info dialogue pop up just before it would search for a boot CD/floppy/partition.

    Check you've enabled the controller.

I have one of those ASUS boards in one of my folding rigs, if my memory serves you may need to flip a jumper on the mobo to enable the SATA controller. Sounds like that's your problem.

Spinner, yup. Jumper came in the 'enabled' setting. What's the advantage in running it in 'raid' mode with only one HD?

Tmod, where in the bios would I enable the sata controller?

    Hi,
I got nearly the same problem, and i thought it would be better posting here rather than opening a new thread :-)
My board is asus a7n8x2.0 deluxe
and the sata controller on that board is sil3112.
i got one samsung 160 gig sata drive, and want to use this one (not in raid mode)
on that board with the os on it. my first question is, if i need another driver than the RAID one, when i only use one sata drive?
i tried installing the os (win xp pro), and pressed f6 .... got the driver from the disk and wanted to choose the drive where the os should be installed. i deleted the old os partition and build a new one. everything alright until now, but formatting this partition does not end and results in an error, saying drive would be defect or is not connected properly. may this error be caused by using a wrong sata driver?
the drive was working before, and the other partitions show up too.
i had it running with win xp pro before, but it did strange errors, so i decided to reinstall os and try other (newer) sata drivers, but now i got this problem i posted before. i got also 2 wd 80 gig ide drives connected, wich are set to cable select, cause i read wb might cause problems with other settings on t his board.

Firstly to address both yours and MachineGunKelly's question. RAID mode (that doesn't actually mean you have to have a RAID array) means essentially that the SATA controller in question is fully turned on and the controller chip has everything piped through it properly. RAID mode is the best way to run any single or dual disk configuration on the Silicon Image controllers, regardless of whether or not you put those disks (if there's more than one) in a RAID array. At least that is the way I have come to understand it.

Now to address the remainder of your questions Ironhead.

If you get to the format stage in the Windows XP setup that pretty much means the driver has worked because the setup has been able to detect the drive. It is possible the SATA driver could cause those errors during formatting, but if you're using the latest SATA driver from Silicon Image that won't be the problem. You might want to entertain the possibility that the hard drive in question is faulty. Make sure you're using the latest drivers though. Check out the downloads section here at SM if you think you aren't using the latest.

It's always good practice to remove any non-essential IDE drives during the Windows XP setup, it won't screw up your SATA hard drive letter that way (e.g. c:). However it shouldn't really cause any problems, though I have encountered some stability issues on those nforce 2 chipsets with regard to having drives on both the PATA and SATA controllers, however none on your motherboard specifically. Try disconnecting the IDE drives just to make sure.

Also make sure you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard.

As a side note, you want to run your controller in RAID mode (as I explained above), which means you should see the SI3112 controller dialogue flash up upon POST. It should also list the drives you have connected to that SATA controller. The drivers you should be using for this config are the RAID drivers, with the latest driver version being v1.0.0.51 (I think).

Try all of the above and then post back.

Thanks Spinner. One HD only, Sata. XP got to setup and installed fine. Then BSOD'd. Hung every time I tried anything at all.
Well I ran WD diagnostics disk and it reported the SECOND HD from Newegg as faulty. The first was DOA. Guess I'll take a spin with no. 3.

Thanks for all the help bro.
