What is the difference between Artist and Album Artist in Windows Media Player 10 and which of these tags is added to the actual media (mp3s)?

I only see Album Artist and Contributing Artist. The 2nd one is probably in WMA's and the first one is the normal artist in mp3's and other file types.

Album Artist and Artist are both in the grid in the center when you right click you can choose what tags to display. It's one of those. The Album Artist Seems to reflect Album Artist and Artist reflects Contributing Artist. But it seems to work the same way for MP3 and WMA as far as I can tell. But it seems like I have to add the Artist's name in to places instead of one.

Well I just checked. My MP3's are fully tagged and there's not album artist. There's the wma file that's originally there when you install xp/wmp and it does have it. Like I said, I think its only related to wma files. Just checked ID3-TagIt and there's no entry in a mp3 for album artist.
